Today, I'm excited to let you in on the not-so-secret, uproarious ritual we've cooked up here at Sightsavers India – a midday game of Carrom. We all have that one hour set aside for lunch on our working days, so we decided why not spend the second half of it playing Carrom. What started as a passing idea has become a norm (almost a custom) at our office. I must confess that our Carrom skills aren't quite legendary, not yet, at least. But here's the thing: I firmly believe that a game of Carrom can do wonders for camaraderie and memory-making. It's not about becoming a Carrom master (although there’s no harm in becoming one!), it's more about the shared moments, the laughter, and the ever-present chaos that ensues. Curious about our advanced Carrom tactics, are you? Well, let me tell you, our games have introduced an impressive repertoire of unintentional trick shots. We've got rebounds that defy the laws of physics and strikes that seem to have a mind of their own, zipping across the board in defiance of all logic. But here's the real magic: the echoing laughter from our Carrom games is the sweetest sound in our office between 1.30 – 2 PM. It's a reminder that even in the noble and serious world of nonprofit work, there's room for lighter and upbeat moments. So, to all my amazing colleagues who dive into the midday Carrom madness, I've got one thing to say: just as in Carrom, where each striker is meticulously aimed, each move calculated, and every shot leads either to victory or loss, life presents countless choices and challenges. I’ve never done this before I’m freaking out. I can’t do this. What do you do when facing self-doubt? WHY DID I SIGN UP TO RIDE 20 MILES?! That's all I could think leading up to Lowvelo. I reached out to friends, mentors, and colleagues who've always had faith in me. Their encouragement and guidance were lifelines, reinforcing that I'm not on this journey by myself. As age advances , we realize that we need to be physically fit to realize our dreams. Every evening I put on my sneakers and go for a walk . One day, I decided to take a detour and walked through a small lane with houses on either side . The ‘not so affluent’ inhabitants were in a celebratory mood . I was curious and walked right into their midst.   ‘Sir, Manju has purchased a new auto rickshaw and today he will be taking it out’.   And there she was – a beauty in lovely green and yellow. The flower bedecked rickshaw looked smart with the self ignition key and cushioned seats . Additional , Manju had installed a music system with miniature speakers for passenger entertainment. I sat in the front and back seat to get a feel of the vehicle. Manju started the vehicle and gave me a sneak peek into the various controls from ignition to the music system.   As I was about to go , they offered me sweets which I accepted gleefully. ‘I will certainly take a ride in your auto’, I said as I left the place.   Often in life, we wait for success on a big scale while ignoring our small achievements along the way. Big or small, success is success.The success of a businessman is no different than that of a municipality worker who has been promoted. Call it the poor man's Uber, the auto meant the world for Manju. More important than success per se is the need to celebrate success at every stage in life for therein lies your happiness. Sometimes, decisions are best made with your heart, not your head. Meet Basil. Basil likes life.  And balls. Rugby balls, footballs and tennis balls are all appreciated. Basil joined my family 2 weeks ago on an adoption trial, and we completed the adoption yesterday. He has already made a huge impact on all of us. My daughter is responsible for feeding him. My son is doing a lot of the training and walking. My husband takes him out and about. And I involve him when I look after the horses. And we all spend a lot of time playing with him and fussing him. To be honest, he has just fitted in, and I can’t imagine not having him here. But we weren’t looking for a dog. Much less a large 6-year-old dog that needed re-homing. I stumbled across him whilst searching for a pony on Facebook (long story. And no, I haven’t found a pony yet. Just Basil). Basil was bred by someone I know, and his owners could no longer give him the lifestyle he needed due to changing circumstances. I did something that I rarely do. I acted on impulse. It’s one of the best decisions that I’ve made in a long time. The moral of the story is that sometimes opportunities present themselves. We then have a choice. We can either allow ourselves to be diverted away from our planned route, or remain steadfast on our intended path. It is important to have some flexibility. Often, seizing opportunities delivers unexpected benefits. However, it is important to work through the consequences before you just dive in and follow your heart. Is this a diversion? Or a complete change of destination? For us, it is a diversion that has been under discussion for a long time. Being presented with the opportunity was the catalyst to make it happen.
