What was Patron thinking?!? 🤔 Discontinuing Tequila Patrón XO just as the Espresso Martini became one of the most popular cocktails. Now, they are bringing it back because they realized they made a big mistake. Completely missing the most popular cocktail trend. Espresso Martini 🍸 But, I feel like this just screams as a move out of desparation. And that's why TIMING IS EVERYTHING! Too many underestimate the power of timing. Many brands fail being being too early or too late. Here are my thoughts on returning Patron XO for a "limited time.” 1) They are only making it "limited" so they can test the market and manage the price while not looking silly by bringing it back full time yet. Scarcity is also a very good marketing opportunity. 2) Patron is frantically trying to get back their missing market share that they gave up in the first place! Once again, that's why timing is everything. Do you think this is a desparation move by Patron?

They discontinued it reluctantly because of capacity issues on their core items. Every industry person knows this. They couldn’t keep up with their silver demand which is way more profitable and important. We all knew they would bring it back at some point. Yes, a few other brands took advantage. They knew that would happen too. Let’s use a Coca-Cola example. Let’s say demand for regular Coke spiked and you couldn’t keep up and literally shelves were empty. You are at max capacity. Do you extend your production of regular Coke or do you stop and make some FRESCA because The Long Drink is showing some popularity? This was Patron’s real dilemma. Look at all the huge PR hype they are getting! Most bartenders will tell you they couldn’t hardly give it away before. It was an example of a great product that few ordered. Now people will fight for it. Desperation? Patron is riding a huge wave of demand for luxury tequila and this couldn’t be working out any better for them.

I worked for Patron from 2005-2014, this brand was amazing to build and the strategy behind the execution was great. It exploded in pockets no one was expecting and we capitalized off of it. I handled the Caribbean which was one of the largest territories for it, Bahamas, Jamaica -couldn't ship enough.

Yes; but what’s their alternative? Not bring it back? They made a mistake and mis-timed the market. Now their doing their best to amend it. The combination of the brand equity + sales & distro infrastructure + price point is probably strong enough to drive some bottom line margin still.

The average consumer won’t overthink it like this though, so no reason for them not to.

Perfect timing for this 👏

Just to be all fact based... Neilsen puts Expresso Martini as the #3 US cocktail, far behind the Marg and the Mule. The Old Fashioned is #4 but is so close that it's functionally tied as #3.
