Walking the talk….from a Sandy Beach!! Farm Boy opened, this week, its 48th store and the first I have not been actively involved in the set up of and not present to open since 2003. For those counting that’s a lot of stores 😀 For those that follow my thoughts on leadership, you know I firmly believe in surrounding myself with the best people, pointing them in the right direction, creating the right culture then getting out of the way. Due to some construction delays and a previously planned southern vacation I had to do just that this week. I watched from a far as my team and the whole Farm Boy team flawlessly executed the opening of a beautiful new store in Oshawa. They did an amazing job!! As a leader my thoughts were never “I need to be there to make it happen” or god forbid lol what if they did a better job than I could have. What I watched from the sandy beach was a team do exactly as they had been trained to do and made it even better. I can’t say I didn’t feel guilty for not being there, but that ok, that’s humility. What I felt was an overwhelming sense of pride watching these folks come together and do it better than I could have, because they are better!! Hire the right people, teach them well, remove the obstacles, create the right culture then get out of the way!! Great things happen! Stores 49 &50 coming soon. Stay tuned!

It is both incredibly humbling and equally rewarding when you build a team of people that are smarter than you are. Don’t try to be the smartest person in the room, be the one that surrounds yourself with the best, point them in the right direction and watch them go!
