Investing their resources and time into college students and giving opportunities to those not already in the space and not hiring from within only, they scout talent early in a student's education journey thereby providing opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach without some type of military contractual obligation or higher level of education and experience. Their strategy is to engage with students from freshman year onwards, offering internships, mentorship, and development programs that build skills and knowledge in acquisition and contracting. Where are lessons taught to prepare students for the workforce? If you are lucky, real-world feedback in an internship. If you are Lucky. My college internship was with the US Government Accountability Office. Sounds fancy and fun yes! It was an incredible experience. The purpose of the GAO is to evaluate spending and performance for the United States government. As a college junior, this was an experience beyond measure and expectations. My first project focused on the 1990 census non-response follow-up. This has congressional oversight, thus compliance was critical. My 2nd project was beyond amazing. We evaluated training performance for a major Army infantry company. There was a problem with land availability and purchasing more land sparked tension with the surrounding community. I did some complex data analysis on various metrics to support a solution. That was not the real impact. The best part was the direct feedback from my supervisors. For our final presentation, we traveled 2+ hours from Kansas City to the Army base. Crossing the wheat fields of Kansas in a Mercury Grand Marquis, I got schooled: Knowledge sharing and direct feedback likely few in my college class at KU ever got at that career stage. I was told who would attend the meeting. Explanations of Army protocols. How to address a General properly. The differences in the stars of the generals. Where to sit. How to stand. When to speak. How to ask questions. How to listen so I could take quality notes and help the rest of our team. Then, they (my 3 colleagues), shared stories. 2 were #veterans. 1 was in the #armyreserve. They talked about service and past projects. They spoke about things I should know. They talked about separating politics from the focus of the GAO. And more. Those individuals shaped me. They helped make me, a college student, a #professional. They cared about me and my #careergrowth, otherwise, they would have listened to the radio rather than talk to me. I wonder if college students today value the opportunity to get this type of feedback, to learn from these stories. I wonder if supervisors and managers, have the time and take the time to provide feedback and share stories. Again and again, I hear that professionalism is a skill gap. It is tricky. Things on campus don't work precisely the way they do in the world of work. Add to it, levels of stress individuals face and sometimes, our communication seems "unprofessional." Here is some assessment to do: 1. What doesn't someone early in their career know or not know? There is a learning process. What is needed is time to share and teach. 2. What does someone choose not to know? This is a problem and often, feedback is needed. Here, we can't sugar coat things. 3. What does someone know yet not apply? That also requires feedback but could become a performance issue with consequences. At the root of this: curiosity. We listen because we want to know. #archercareer #earlycareer #students

Key take-aways: - Consider pursuing an MBA program to open doors to LDPs/rotational programs and other excellent opportunities. - Step out of your comfort zone to learn something new. - If in an MBA or other program, join student organizations and pursue special programs and competitions offered by the university. - Highly recommend MBA student veterans to attend the MBA Veterans Conference for internship and post-graduation career opportunities. - Leverage the military-connected community network to assist with deciding on the best university program to pursue and with job searching efforts. - Expand your network outside of the military community. - Request informational interviews to learn about employers and various career paths. - Research the organization before hiring events and interviews. - Remember that interviews are a two-way process. Employers and candidates are evaluating each other to ensure they can work together. - Be proactive, open-minded, and humble. - Build meaningful professional relationships with fellow employees. - Volunteer for cross-functional projects to learn about other areas of the organization. - If available, recommend joining an organization's business resource groups or employee resource groups. It is graduation season, and many will enter the professional workforce for the first time in the coming weeks and months. What advice would you give to those joining us? As a first-generation college graduate, I don't think I understood the importance of networking, mentorship, and understanding "office politics" (that doesn't have to be a negative thing, by the way). My dad worked in the same factory building transmissions for our military after serving in the Air Force, and my mom worked in the same ophthalmologist's office for 30 years. Through no fault of their own, they did not understand the importance of having a "personal board of directors" and did not explain much about the workplace beyond the importance of getting the degree. Because of this, I would advise the class of 2024 to build a "Board" of those who will serve as mentors, give advice, answer the tough questions, and give some tough love when needed. That board will evolve and serve you all the way through retirement. What advice do you have for recent graduates? Some of this advice may also be helpful for us not-so-recent grads!

I could talk about this program for a while. But, here is the real sales pitch for you. If you walk away from the military today, do you have the skills you need to navigate the corporate world? Do you have the network to help you land that job? No? This is where FourBlock comes in. The program helps ease the transition process. All while giving you the opportunity to ask the questions you’ve been dying to ask, to people at the companies you want to work at. Where else do you get opportunity like that? Not sold yet? Ok. I’ll tell you about the real secret of this program. But remember it’s a secret, so keep it to yourself. 🤫 You get access to people with huge networks that will actually connect you with people! You want to work somewhere specific? I have no doubt that Monica M. McNeal probably knows the person you need to talk to. Think about it, you did X many years in the military and PCS’ etc. Everytime, you relied on your network to get something that came down last minute done. A co-use of a range signed, ammo to arrive early and so much more. The adage that your network is your networth couldn’t be more true when it comes to your transition. If that doesn’t sell you, they have free food. 🤣 I highly recommend this program for all servicemembers. Our cohort was full of different services, different periods of their career and even one who had been out for nearly a decade.

Seven years ago this month, at the age of 17, I stepped on the yellow footprints at MCRD San Diego and swore in to become a United States Marine. Like any other Marine who joined right after high school, I sought the discomforts, the challenges, and an opportunity to become a man. Seven years and two deployments later, I received exactly what I asked for. And I will never forget the nights freezing in the mountains of Bridgeport, the days sweating uncontrollably in the Middle East, and the constant pushes to my mental and physical limits. But my most valuable gains were the lifelong friendships along the way, the mindset of “mission first, mission accomplishment,” and the lessons on how to be a better leader and a better teammate. These are also the skills that transferred directly into my professional development post-military. I want to take this opportunity and mention all the help I received from my mentors along the way. Ethan Hamilton, my drill instructor, trained me to be a Marine. You might not remember who I was among your thousands of other recruits, but I will always remember your motivational words. Michael Sleiman, my platoon sergeant from my time in 3/5, taught me to be a professional while being humble. Max Jesse Goldberg, my advisor from Service to School, assisted me with my college application and informed me about what to get ready for once getting to Cornell. Christopher Kim, my new member educator from Global Cornell Connection, taught me about business professionalism along with the fundamentals of business. Matt Kosara, CFA, CAIA from Hudson Edge Investment Partners and Tim Hsia from Context Venture, thank you for the internship opportunities and for allowing me to learn real-world knowledge in business. Lastly, I want to use this post and reach out to all the veterans who are doubting themselves in transitioning into professional fields post-military, especially those from the enlisted side. It is a scary thing when veterans lose their sense of purpose after the military. For me, it was hard going from eating crayons, slinging lead, and drawing sector sketches to making financial models and doing case studies. It was scary leaving all the things you were familiar with behind and stepping into a foreign field. It was also extremely difficult to put down my ego and start from the bottom again. But remember why some of us signed up for the military: it was for the discomforts, the challenges, and the sense of accomplishment after missions. So look out for these resources, the veteran community has been nothing but wonderful across industries.
