Is International Women’s Day becoming performative? International Women’s Day is a time to lobby for change, raise awareness about discrimination and celebrate women’s achievements. Sadly, singular social media posts that simply name the women in brands' teams can come off as insincere and performative, reducing the occasion to a marketing ploy. Women who make and drink whisky deserve representation and recognition all-year round, not just for one day when they’re highlighted to demonstrate organisations’ ‘diversity’ before becoming absent from feeds the remainder of the year. Why is year-round recognition important? Although women have always been a vital part of the whisky industry, they’ve rarely been represented in advertising campaigns, or at industry events and awards. Even today, representation is concerningly low, with just 16% of women working in whisky believing they’re fairly represented in marketing or at industry awards*. The theme for this IWD is #inspireinclusion, so why not make a committment to highlighting and celebrating women among your organisation and consumer base 365 days a year, rather than just 1? Here are some ideas of how to do just that: • Commit to showing more women enjoying whisky on your socials • Feature women in your business on your socials (if they're willing). • Stories about the women in your business can help connect audiences to your brand (did you know consumers are more likely to favour marketing when women are positively portrayed?) • Put them forward for industry events, from tastings and networking to conferences and panels • Nominate them for industry awards Head to our website to learn more about how to support women in our industry: https://lnkd.in/e2SWwi-E *Do You Even Like Whisky? survey, OurWhisky Foundation, 2023 #WomenInWhisky #OurWhiskyFoundation #InternationalWomensDay #Whisky #IWD2024 #representationmatters #whisky #whiskey #womenmakewhisky #ourwhisky #femalefounders

Recently, Our Whisky Foundation released the results of their project, "Do You Even Like Whisky?"--a survey of about 600 women globally who work in the industry, asking how they have been treated by their management, their peers, and whiskey consumers. I do not know a single woman in the industry who would be surprised by the responses, and most men I know wouldn't be surprised, either. As a woman who has held many distillery roles, from entry level to management, and a woman who has often been a bar patron just looking to enjoy a dram, I've seen or experienced all the negative points on the survey. It is... disappointing. The behavior toward women persists because, quite simply, influencers and managers accept it. But in the last few years, I've also had the privilege of connecting with women and men who are determined to make a difference, who step forward to openly lead toward inclusion rather than the "lead from behind" that is mostly code for "don't make people uncomfortable because change is hard." These women don't apologize for their expertise and ambition, and reach out a hand to other women who want to join them. In 2019, I described yet another, "Women don't really drink whiskey!" experience I'd had to top industry executive. In frustration, he said, "When are they going to figure out how much of this business is run by women?" Soon, I hope. And it's work like this survey that provide solid direction of where behaviors must change. #whisky #whiskey #bourbon #whiskylife #whiskeywomen #bourbonwomen #leadership #inclusionmatters https://lnkd.in/g5e36yhD

Today is International Women’s Day 2024 - #InspireInclusion. We need to do much more to drive parity, equity, and inclusivity. So. Much. More. For as much progress as has been made, we still have a long, long way to go before this conversation is a celebration. No one person can change the world, but the world will not change if we do not each drive change. With that in mind, I want to recognize and appreciate just a few of the powerful women I know who tirelessly advocate, inspire, and champion for positive action. No, we’re not there yet, but when has that stopped any of us before? So, a big shout out to a few leading lights in my ecosystem who #InspireInclusion: Teresa YoKell Joy Taylor Sondra Leibner Angela Nalwa Jennifer Morelli Sarah Balabanov, PMP, CSCP Caroline Tan Mary Fredendall Maren Sonne Supriya Nair Shannon Cunningham Liza Rothhammer TaMiya Dickerson Andrée Bourgon Lori Davis Gayle Brim Nancy Matchey Lyndsi Lee Amanda Batchelet Jorie Fox Sara Curtis Cassidy Larson Rachel Hare Emily Zucker Ashley Thompson and more! Also, an extra YASS to: - the many drivers of Women in Supply Chain cohorts across industry that have sprung up and are flourishing in the past five years - Sarah Barnes-Humphrey, Sarah Balabanov, PMP, CSCP, Christine Barnhart, CPIM, PMP and others - I see you, let's keep going - and - the additional industry luminaries and business leaders who I have crossed paths with at some point in my career who show the way every day, such Lora Cecere, Amber Salley, Raquel Soares, Andrea Atwell, Angela Korompilas, Katy Vu, Cecilia Chao, Bindiya Vakil, Marie Borges, Karyn Beisheim McKenna, Annie Agle, Kathryn Caggiano, Kathy Kelley, Ngoc Phan, and others.

What a great news as we wrap up 2023! The HEINEKEN Company has been selected by the World Economic Forum as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Lighthouse for our Women in Sales programme 💫 In the lead-up to the WEF Annual Meeting in Davos in January 2024, HEINEKEN is showcased in the report as one of the companies that are leading the way on DEI. Our Women in Sales programme is dedicated to attracting, retaining and developing women in Sales, while fostering an inclusive environment. As a result of our collective efforts, the percentage of female senior managers in Sales globally grew from 9% in 2020 to 19% in 2022. Our ambition is to increase this number to 25% by 2025, in our path to gender balance, and to continue seeing more and more women thriving in the market. At HEINEKEN, we believe that embracing DEI enriches our lives, strengthens our business and fosters a sense of true togetherness. 🍻 While we acknowledge that there is still progress to be made, we celebrate the positive steps we are taking along this journey. DO YOU EVEN LIKE WHISKY? THE BARRIERS HOLDING BACK WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY OurWhisky Foundation has such a critical mission. I greatly respect founder Becky Paskin and her team of amazing women. I am one of the women who answered the poll. I gave honest answers from my experience in the industry and being a female consumer. We have done much work towards equality since I began working in the hospitality and spirits industry. However, this report hurts my heart. There is still so much to be done. Here are a few statistics from the report; “81% of women working in whisky have been asked if they ‘actually like whisky’ while at work or making a purchase.” “Only 16% of those polled think the industry is doing enough to change Whisky’s masculine image, and the same number feels that women are fairly represented in whiskey advertising and marketing.” “70% of respondents have experienced inappropriate or sexual remarks while doing their job.” This report is a glaring example of the work ahead of us and the need for allies and change. I am so proud of the women in my industry who continue to blaze trails for all of us. Thank you! Please give this a read: https://lnkd.in/eyAu9b2v
