What can we expect to see from freight forwarding in 2024? ⚡ According to Maersk, climate change and geopolitical tensions loom large over the industry. While “black swan” events were one of the key trends for freight forwarders in 2023, the focus is expected to shift away from the random, and recentre on the inevitable: climate change and geopolitical unrest. With disruptive events such as wildfires, droughts and hurricanes becoming more frequent, the need for freight forwarders to become more flexible and agile when supplies of resources are impacted, transportation routes are cut off, production is interrupted and costs rise as a consequence is key. Does this ring true for you? Let us know in the comments below! Follow us for more industry insights on your LinkedIn feed 💡 #freightforwarding #industryinsights

Windward’s webinar will host industry experts, like Jakob Larsen of BIMCO, Joshua Hutchinson of Ambrey and chaired by Ami Daniel. Together we will analyze and explore the significant shifts in the ocean freight space, and will offer actionable guidance for organizations looking to proactively manage their shipments in light of the ongoing crisis. Receive practical insights about: • Most impacted ports • Carrier performances • Up-to-date transit times I am pleased to share Xeneta #insights and #data during the session. The Panama Canal drought may be a long term issue if conditions don’t improve there. Shippers may end up moving more and more freight through the west coast ports as they may look more stable as time goes on. Especially as the pandemic chaos has faded for the ports themselves so they can take on the influx without having 100 ships waiting weeks to be unloaded. Good for carriers out west to boost freight volumes. Also, as more and more carriers are exiting the market for the next quarter or two, it’ll only push up the tender rejection rates and hopefully rates themselves. Hopefully the next couple quarters aren’t as brutal as they were the last couple years then.

When it comes to trade disruption, Baltimore Port is particularly important for the auto industry. It ranks number one in the US for the import and export of vehicles, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration. It is also impacting the movement of goods for industrial machinery, lumber, coal and imports of agricultural products. Fortunately, the flow of containers to Baltimore can likely be redistributed to bigger ports, with containers taken on and off affected ships at already scheduled port calls at other big container ports in the region. As Emily Stausbøll shared with news presenters on Bloomberg's Markets Today, "Every little bit is going to add to the pressure that we're already under. But I think if we're comparing [Baltimore] to what we've seen in recent months with the Red Sea and the Panama Canal, this is a much more regional situation on the ocean side of things. For the container shipping markets, it's manageable with the volumes that are currently going through the Port Baltimore, it gets very tricky for those who have to take the cargo onwards from the port, to your warehouse, to your shops" as they will be having to source new land side transport solutions for containers being dropped off or picked up at a different ports. When asked how rare these sort of events are, Stausbøll pointed to a recent collision in Turkish waters that resulted in a ship sailing into a wharf at port and also the 2021 Ever Given blockage to show that whilst uncommon, they do happen and supply chains are not without vulnerability. Whilst there are options available to help mitigate the negative impact of the Baltimore Bridge disaster on global supply chains, Stausbøll finished her segment by explaining that "there are no quick fixes." As with the Red Sea crisis, "this is completely out of the carrier's hands and the people in the supply chain." All carriers can do is continue monitoring the market and hoping for a new status quo to be reached as soon as possible so transit times and freight rates become more predictable again. https://lnkd.in/efrcMqTW #baltimore #globalshipping #containershipping #supplychains #USexports
