Last Thursday, MobiliseYourCity organised a session within the "Mobilize Net-Zero: Regional Exchange on Minibus Electrification in Africa" to identify the challenges, threats and opportunities of integrating #electrification into the urban mobility planning process and paratransit reforms. 🚍 The session allowed for the exchange of ideas and experiences from different MobiliseYourCity member cities and helped us to reflect on how we can continue to work together with local authorities and our donors to support and facilitate the greening of the transport sector in Africa.🌍 Building on this session, we will work towards raising public officials' awareness and capacity. We aim to promote tools and methodologies that allow us to develop a clear rationale for the ecological transition's importance and the challenges and benefits that its implementation will bring to the urban mobility planning process and paratransit reforms. 🌍 The Global South is urbanising fast. 📈 With urbanisation, transport demand soars, enabling citizens to access opportunities and earn a living. In Africa, for example, the continent’s urban population is set to double in just 25 years. 🚍 While high-capacity projects like bus rapid transit and rail are in progress, a significant portion of public transport journeys in the Global South are served by small-scale and often unregulated paratransit operators. 🔁 In fact, paratransit accounts for around half of all public transport journeys in Africa and Latin America. 📝 Recognising the critical role of paratransit in future mobility solutions, we are excited to announce our new Policy Brief: Description, Roles, and Functions of Paratransit. Rwanda here we come! Last week, BasiGo announced our first steps outside of Kenya. In a few short months, BasiGo will have electric buses operating in Kigali, Rwanda. 58% off Rwanda's electricity comes from renewables. Just like Kenya, an electric bus in Rwanda has a massive and immediate impact on climate emissions and air pollution. But in Rwanda, this mission goes well beyond environmental impact. Following the COVID pandemic, Rwanda is facing an urgent need for more public transport, at exactly the same time that Public transport providers are struggling under the highest fuel prices in over a decade. Electric buses are the solution to this compounding problem and everyone agrees they are the future for public transport in the country. They represent the chance for Wast African countries to decouple from fossil fuel imports and instead grow public transport using renewable energy generated in the region. But facing this urgent need for more public transport in Rwanda, we have to find a way to accelerate the transition! We need to build an entire ecosystem at light speed - E-Buses, charging, service, and financing! When we started BasiGo, we did not anticipate how important electrification of public transport would become to the region at this moment in time. 🚍🌍 It starts today! Mobilize Net-Zero: Regional Exchange on Minibus Electrification in Africa is happening in Kigali, Rwanda. Despite global efforts to electrify transportation, the paratransit sector has often been overlooked. While the electrification of smaller vehicles like 2- and 3-wheelers is gaining traction in Africa and Asia, minibuses and higher-capacity vehicles remain challenging to electrify. This first-of-its-kind regional exchange will bring together government decision-makers, researchers, and experts to collaborate on modernising the minibus sector throughout the continent.
