One of the questions I hear most often about #Finland and #happiness is: What about #saunas? So let's explore. 😃 🇫🇮 First, some context: There are 3.3 million saunas in Finland, which has a population of 5.6 million. (More than one sauna for every two people!) In 2020, saunas made it onto UNESCO's list of intangible #culturalheritage of humanity. While they originally began to fulfill a very practical need for heat and sanitation, today saunas' significance goes far deeper: "From therapy room to pub, refuge, debating society and creche, it’s a place where people of all ages connect." Saunas are considered #sacred spaces, and places to find #community as well as #peace. In the sauna, you're fully present, in the moment. Saunas are also a place where everyone is equal and stripped of status – you don't have to worry about how you look. “When you’re in the sauna you don’t have your fancy clothes; we’re all just people in the sauna. That’s the best part.” And, another new word for you: löyly, which means steam or heat in Finnish, but you can think of it also as the "hug" of a sauna. Mmmm. "Exploring Japan's Bathing Culture: Sento and Onsen" Japan's rich bathing culture is deeply rooted in its abundance of natural hot springs, the perceived health benefits of mineral-rich waters, and the spiritual significance of bathing in Buddhism and Shintoism. The country boasts two distinct types of communal baths: sento and onsen. Sentos, or public baths, and onsens, which are natural hot springs, although similar in nature, operate under different guidelines and offer unique experiences. Sentos have been integral to Japanese social life since the 8th century. However, with the introduction of private bathtubs in homes post-1950s, many sentos faced closure. Despite this, sentos are still regarded as vital for public health and hygiene in Japan, to the extent that they were categorized as essential services during the pandemic under the Public Bath House Act. Unlike sentos, which can use water from any source, onsens are subject to stricter regulations. To qualify as an onsen, the bath must use naturally occurring hot spring water with a minimum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and contain certain minerals. Onsens are typically located in rural areas and often form part of resort complexes, complete with dining facilities and accommodations. While onsens attract tourists with their scenic locations and luxurious amenities, sentos serve as neighborhood bathhouses.
