ChangeNOW Day 1 takeaways ( 3 positives / 3 concerns / 1 hope) 💙 The Positives: 1) There is a growing awareness of the impact that agricultural chemicals have on the human body, which can significantly boost support for regenerative organic agriculture from a wider audience. 2) The connection between soil health and human health is becoming increasingly prominent. Topics such as the gut/soil microbiome, nutrient density, and the concept of food as medicine are gaining momentum. 3) Regenerative farmers are being invited to speak more frequently at events. It’s invaluable to hear directly from them about the necessary actions in the field and how policies can support rather than hinder their innovations. 🙈 The Concerns: 1) Despite Dr. Vandana Shiva's opening speech on ecological feminism as a driving force for change and the need for justice for peasants—which was truly moving—I remain skeptical about significant changes in the way capital flows in the investor lounge. 'Impact investors' are still seeking returns of five, ten, or even fifteen times their investments. Which nature/community solution could ever offer this kind of financial return - despite solving real problems for real people? 2) We tend to view the climate crisis as an opportunity to continue making money without feeling guilty. The mantra is ‘we need sustainable solutions’ WHILE MAINTAINING PROFITS. However, there will be no profit without healthy soil, water, and clean air. 3) At almost every conference I attend in Western Europe, it is very clear who serves whom. Approximately 90% of attendees are white, while more than 50-60% of the service staff, such as those cleaning, are people of color. I wish to understand the needs and concerns of those who are there to collect plastic bottles after 'us' woke/regenerative folks leave. We need more social inclusion in discussions about the climate. 🕊 The Hopes: Thanks to decentralized media, organizations, and individuals without hidden agendas are gaining visibility. Films like "Common Grounds" are helping spread the message to larger audiences, making us hopeful for change that is detached from corporate power. #regenerativeagriculture #soilhealth #eu #nutrtientdensity

Transforming the way food is produced and consumed across the world is vital to cutting carbon emissions and building a just and regenerative future. That’s why we are working on transforming food systems across our offices. In Southeast Asia we are focusing on protein: an area of exciting technical innovation that has focused too narrowly on simply mitigating adverse environmental impacts, rather than restoring planetary and human health health. Our Protein Challenge Southeast Asia initiative is working collaboratively to create a future-fit, just and regenerative protein system. No more glamour, no more sugar-coating... The proportion of #women in founding teams is a mere 16% according to the KfW Start-up Monitor 2023. It's a narrative that could easily be demotivating but the innovations I've learned about from women leaders tell a bit more of an encouraging story. The other week, I was honored to make it in the #Top100 #WomenInnovationLeaders in the DACH region by SHEconomy - Die Wirtschaftsplattform für Frauen. 365 Tage im Jahr. And from this, I was introduced to some of the innovators and #innovations in the future-oriented #food and #agritech sectors. Even though the numbers don't paint the brightest picture, the women I met in real life gave me some hope and excitement for what's to come. Check out three that *really stuck out to me and please go support them with a like or follow, they're doing really cool things: 🙌 Klim - Nina Mannheimer Klim is working together with farmers, businesses, and consumers to promote #regenerative #agriculture. The goal? To sustainably decrease CO2 emissions, enhance soil health and #biodiversity, and contribute to #climate protection while ensuring productive harvests (-the things we don't talk about enough)! 🙌 Unverschwendet - Cornelia Diesenreiter Unverschwendet is on a mission to turn overlooked and #surplus #fruit and #vegetables into things like jam, chutney, syrup, pesto, and vinegar. They've already rescued over 10,000,000 kg of produce (!!!). 🙌 BioCraft - Theresa Rothenbücher, PhD Pet food. Who would've thought??? BioCraft is innovating pet food by producing real meat for cats and dogs through cultured meat #technology, addressing the environmental and ethical challenges associated with traditional #meatproduction. And to anyone still reading this, I challenge you – do some digging of your own. The world needs more eyes on these game-changers. ✊

We really enjoyed the conversations on yesterday's webinar "Harnessing Diverse Proteins to Nourish LMIC Populations". Some of the key pointers we gathered include: ✒Simple resolutions such as changing the name from "alternative" proteins to "diverse" proteins, could go a long way in promoting adaptation of various protein sources within LMICs. 🍛It is important to realize that populations consume foods, not single proteins therefore the conversation should be in view of the entire food matrix. 📊Evidence from research generates information that directs interventions and policy around diet diversity. 🍲School feeding programmes have proven to be effective mediums for the uptake of diverse protein sources including locally procured high iron beans and pelagic fish thus supporting local smallholder livelihoods 🔪Chefs are key stakeholders in efforts to shape consumer habits and food systems transformation as they influence what the population eats by the trends they create. 🥩Appreciation and consumption of alternative (diverse) proteins in LMICs may be increased by making scientific information available to the population and by incorporating local textures, flavors, tastes and names. By leveraging market demand, collaboration, and investments, the movement aims to make food a solution to health, climate, and environmental challenges. The call urges immediate investment for a healthier future.
