Good read - "‘Holy grail’ or ‘ridiculously expensive’? Concerns about misusing carbon removal aren’t just hypothetical, according to experts. They’re already materializing. Fossil fuel companies are involved in six of the 21 direct air capture hub development projects that the Department of Energy chose to support in August. The proposals the agency selected for potential funding include ones backed by oil majors Chevron and Shell as well as regional petroleum producers in California and Alaska. The biggest beneficiary of all was Occidental, which could get up to $500 million from DOE to help the oil driller develop a direct air capture hub in South Texas. Hollub, the Occidental CEO, isn’t the only oil and gas executive touting the promise of carbon removal. ExxonMobil new expanded Emissions comitments ……. Recently, we made the decision to join the UN’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership. Known as OGMP 2.0, this program asks participating companies to measure, verify and report on their methane emissions. We’ve agreed to join because policy makers and companies need to work together on strong measurement, reporting and verification standards. The evolving technical landscape and ongoing collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have opened the door for us to meet OGMP 2.0’s expectations across our global upstream operations. This decision represents yet another important step in our commitment to reducing emissions.

The Biden administration is taking a significant step to combat climate change by announcing $850 million in funding for projects aimed at reducing methane emissions from oil and gas production. The grants, funded through the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, will be awarded by the DOE and EPA across three main categories. First, there will be support for small oil and gas producers to reduce methane emissions from existing wells and infrastructure. Second, up to 26 awards will focus on minimizing leaks from equipment such as engines and compressors. Third, funding will be allocated to partnerships for tracking methane emissions in communities near oil and gas infrastructure. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is a major contributor to climate change, and cutting its emissions is seen as a crucial short-term measure. The EPA's recent rules and the upcoming grant program underscore the administration's aggressive stance on reducing methane pollution.
