The San Diego Military Career Transition Summit hosted by North San Diego Business Chamber was a high-impact event for designed for: 1.    Any transition military member 2.    All military career counselors and personnel officers 3.    Anyone in a leadership position serving a transitioning military member 4.    Any civilian hiring manager that needs to learn how to tap into veteran talent Each panel offered tactical and strategic advice for transition military members and local business leaders looking to hire veterans. Check out the incredible line-up here Top Lessons & Takeaways 1.    Network, network, network. Start building your network and friendships outside of military channels. Get out of your comfort zone. In the great words of Chris Thorne, SHRM-SCP, “the network you need is not the network you currently have.” 2.    Update your LinkedIn profile. There are many great resources to learn how to optimize your LinkedIn to work FOR you. Military/vets can get one year of premium for free, which unlocks great features and an extensive library of high impact training. 3.    Improve your communication skills and become a storyteller to sell your incredible value to any future employer. Check out Toastmasters or other groups to practice. 4.    Do the work. You are in the driver’s seat to align your experience and skills with your personal and professional goals. There are so many resources out there to assist you in your journey, but you have to do the work. Coming from the infantry you were always told "your skills won't transfer into the civilian world" and there was a lot of truth to that. As a civilian: I will never have to conduct a Battle Drill. I will never have to know rates of fire for different weapon systems. I will never have to remember how to call for fire. I will never have to set up a patrol base and conduct patrol base operations. All of these things are some of the most basic, fundamental skills you learn as an infantryman. Not knowing these would be like a sales rep not knowing how to use a CRM. But unlike a sales rep learning how to use a CRM, how could these skills be transferable to something like IT Staffing? I had no answer for that. So, naturally, when I was interviewing for S3 and on the phone with my soon-to-be CEO, Cynthia Pasky, I asked her "What was your motivation behind hiring veterans? Why hire someone with 0 IT staffing experience just because they are a veteran?" She responded immediately "In the military you are trained for a job you never had any prior experience with. You have already shown the ability to learn and master a new skillset." After hearing that I knew I needed to be on this team. To be the living proof that your skills in the military don't have to align with your civilian job to make you the right fit. So thank you S3 for giving each veteran the opportunity to be that living proof.
