Self Reflection is 🔑 "In the ever-evolving field of disability & human services, taking time to professionally reflect on our practice is more than just beneficial; it's essential. By reflecting, we gain insight into our actions, understand the impact of our decisions, and uncover opportunities for personal growth and learning. Regular reflection helps us understand the complexities of our work and the diverse needs of the individuals we serve. It enables us to refine our approach, improve the quality of care, and enhance the support we offer to individuals living with disabilities. This ongoing process of reflection isn't simply about self-improvement. It fosters empathy, inclusivity, and promotes a culture of continuous learning. It strengthens our ability to adapt to change and ensure that our practices are always grounded in respect and understanding. As we continually engage in professional reflection, we pave the way towards better outcomes for those we serve, while enriching our professional journey. It is not just about 'doing the job,' but rather 'improving the job' – constantly. Encourage professional reflection within your teams, embrace the learning that comes from it, and together, let's build a more inclusive and empowering environment in disability services. #ProfessionalReflection #DisabilityServices #Inclusion #PersonalGrowth"

There are an estimated 2.1 million Australians of working age who have a disability but only 48% of those are employed. At KPMG we believe empowering people with disability means removing barriers and creating a culture for everyone to thrive. Today, we are incredibly proud to launch our second Action and Inclusion plan. Developed in collaboration with the Australian Disability Network and drawing on internal feedback, our three-year plan is an evolution of the work started in our first plan and accelerates the removal of barriers impacting our people with disability. The new plan will focus our work on uplifting the career development of people with disability, improving the accessibility of our end-to-end recruitment processes, and is a multi-year approach to enhancing the accessibility of our technology and deepening our relationships with clients to progress disability inclusion across corporate Australia. We asked a few of our people to share their journey as our people with disability at KPMG and what this new plan means to them, you can read their full stories in our plan.

Disability is not a limitation, but a catalyst for strength, resilience, and boundless potential. Today, on the 3rd December 2023, International People with Disability Day, let us celebrate the unique abilities and unwavering spirit of individuals who inspire us all. Together, we can build a world that is inclusive, accessible, and supportive for every person, regardless of their abilities. Embrace diversity, empower others, and let kindness be the language we use to bridge the gap between abilities and opportunities. We are strongest when we stand united, breaking barriers and creating a future where everyone can thrive. #disabilityinclusion #disabilityawareness #ndisprovider

This week is Disability Action Week, and we are celebrating people with disability; and this year’s theme – ‘Access ignites: it’s good business’ – focuses on increasing employment and economic participation of people with disability. Improving accessibility and inclusion in your business can be the key to making your business thrive. It will allow you to not only recruit and retain staff with disability, but also creating an environment that is welcoming and accessible to customers living with disability. #DisabilityActionWeek #DAW2023 #AccessIgnites [Image description: An image with an orange and red triangular geometric pattern along the bottom. In hopes of hunkering down to study at my local library, I saw Ashley Shew's book, 'Against Technoableism: Rethinking Who Needs Improvement’ (https://lnkd.in/gtTwbcmz), on display. ‘Technoableism’ is a term Ashley coined and, in a nutshell, the book explores the pervasive ways in which technology is spun as a cure-all for disability, an idea in which views disabled people and disabled bodies as inherently ‘broken.’ Ashley herself points out in her interview with Adam Conover that nothing about this is new, which is true. For example, the medical model of disability dissects the systematic ways in which disabled people are often obligated to partake in services that aim at ‘managing’ or ‘curing’ them. Technology is one aspect of it. Other models of disability overlap - like the functional solutions model - in how they contribute to ableist procedures, attitudes, and environments, but it's a lot to discuss. And I'm still learning! When we critique the medical model of disability, I do want to address that it’s not always a rejection of the reality that we have bodies, with medicines and technologies that can help us. Nor is it a rejection of the fact that we may need it or want it. It’s just that this approach to disability alone places the onus of responsibility on the person with disability to navigate inaccessible environments, both physically and socially, rather than on society at large to ensure accessibility. We can’t have that, can we? The thing that I’m loving so far about Ashley’s book is the emphasis of joy. The first chapter declares that “[t]his is a book about the stories that disabled people tell that nondisabled people usually aren’t interested in.” I think the sardonic humour Ashley employs in illustrating this point - that nondisabled people expect or want stories about trauma, grief, and consequently, inspiration from disabled people - was perfect. If this feels new, strange, confusing, curious, or even agreeable, ride the wave. Check out the book. #accessibility #disability #disabilityinclusion #inclusionforall
