I'm a content writer with an irrational love for Wikipedia, insurance, pro wrestling, and tabletop RPGs.
Man, this is a bummer. I have a complicated relationship with Express that dates back to 2006. From a customer in high school who'd hit regular Structure/Express Men sales to becoming an employee both during and after college, it's the place where I really started to fall in love with clothes and fashion. For a long time, working at Express made it really easy to figure out what to wear to practically any event or occasion because I lived and breathed the brand. It was my entire closet! Express is also the place where I — as a post-recession college graduate who wanted to ride the "store management rocket ship" as a career — had my first experiences with professional burnout. Running a store is hard. Effectively managing a store in Independence Center in 2012? Even harder. I eventually moved on to a role that paid the same and didn't require long hours or a 45-minute commute. I tend not to shop at Express as much these days because I just don't have much of a compelling reason to. Maybe I've aged out of the brand. Or it could be that I work remotely and live in gym clothes. Working in retail is not for the faint of heart, but the sheer volume of skills it teaches (especially at the store management level) can and does prepare people for all manner of careers. If you're a hiring manager who has a retail professional's resume come across your desk, don't dismiss it out of hand. I promise those of us with that background can speak to all kinds of experiences. We can learn about and sell new products in a matter of weeks! We know how to overcome objections and make meaningful connections. We've worked as recruiters, business analysts, salespeople, and more. I hope the folks impacted by store closures and whatever downsizing occurs at the corporate level land on their feet. https://lnkd.in/g2sVP2n8

Award Winning Government Contractor | FL Certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) | Founder of CT Wellness Co. | Speaker | EQ Leadership Coach | Workforce Development Consultant
Hey LinkedIn fam!! As you are aware my CT Wellness Co., teaches organizations how to cultivate a healthy workplace culture, so can we discuss what happened at Sephora last week? If you haven't heard, they reached a huge milestone in 2023: $10 billion in revenue! Major right! However, who do you believe deserves recognition for this significant achievement? To celebrate they sent "thank you cookies” with a confidentiality statement to the stores. This did not go well with the store teams though! Sephora failed to capitalize on an opportunity to establish relationships with field teams. The statement of confidentiality with recognition can be seen as disingenuous. It almost seems like an afterthought. This is a sad but quite common big-box corporate gesture. The "cookie thank you" doesn't provide the morale boost and thankfulness that Sephors believes it provides. It does the reverse, potentially leading to employees losing faith in the organization for which they work so hard. No corporation achieves its goals without its teams. It would have been nice to ask the teams how they wanted to celebrate the important milestone, as it is theirs as well as the organization's. Better communication is needed to boost morale and create a positive workplace culture. Here are 3 ways Sephora could have celebrated the milestone and boosted morale: 1. Organize a Recognition Ceremony: Plan a formal gathering to recognize and celebrate the team's accomplishments, including individual contributions. Highlighting specific accomplishments promotes a pleasant environment and increases morale. 2. Employee Appreciation Day: Designate a day dedicated to showing gratitude for your workforce. Provide personalized thank-you notes, small gifts, or even organize team-building activities to strengthen relationships and create a positive workplace culture. 3. Professional Development Opportunities: Invest in your team's growth by offering workshops or courses related to emotional intelligence, stress management, and professional development. This demonstrates a commitment to their well-being and ensures continued success. May this serve as a remember to all organizations, your team is your biggest assets! Recognition goes a long way when done right! Let me know your thoughts in the comments!! Market Research || Business Improvement Program || Market Intelligence || Mystery Shopping || Compliance Audits || Errand || Business and Management Consulting || More
I entered a multi-branded apparel and home decor store, and my overall experience was excellent. However, one specific section left much to be desired due to: 1. Inappropriate language used by the staff. 2. An unwelcoming demeanor from the staff. 3. Staff wearing uniform shirts with rolled-up sleeves. 4. The absence of any sales pitch. 5. A lack of willingness to assist customers. Surprisingly, I was able to establish a connection with one of the employee by showing some compassion, and I discovered that the root of the problem was not immediately apparent. The employee was facing challenges because: 1. His infant was ill. 2. His request for leave had been denied. 3. He was assigned to a role requiring customer communication. 4. The management displayed indifference toward his predicament. 5. He had received a stern rebuke from his manager during the morning briefing. Possible underlying reasons for these issues include: 1. The management's failure to hire an adequate number of staff. 2. Favoritism by management toward certain employees. 3. Potential gender inequality within the workplace. 4. The belief among management that these issues would go unnoticed. 5. A lack of a confidential channel for employees to voice their concerns. Mystery shopping is the ideal solution to highlight and address issues by providing insights into the customer experience and staff concerns. It involves undercover shoppers assessing various aspects of the store's operations, offering an objective perspective that can uncover problems such as unprofessional behavior and inadequate customer service. This approach leads to improved shopping experiences and may reveal the underlying reasons behind these issues.
