Year 5 student, very articulate, bright...and yes, having persuaded her school to do a screener and then her parent paying for a formal dyslexia report, she has been assessed as dyslexic. Only then did the school put some intervention in place, and thankfully the correct intervention. Why has it taken the parent to query this and not her school, way before year 5? I realise sometimes it is harder to spot, but this......really! Please school staff, update your knowledge so that you can spot these students earlier. It makes such a huge difference to the young person's learning journey. With so much free, time efficent training available there should be no excuse for a difficulty this obvious to not be picked up. If your child needs an education plan, why would you wait? "More time" and the "wait and see" approach doesn't cancel out gaps in learning. There's NO requirement in IDEA Law mandating failure or wait time BEFORE parents can request special education testing or a 504 Plan. Parents and schools can initiate the special education/504 process at ANY time if they suspect their child has a disability and needs special education or related services. Final preparations underway for tomorrow’s event!!! Today I’ve been spending time on my presentation and reflecting on what I wish my teachers knew about me when I was a student at school. What could’ve helped my teachers understand that I was struggling in so many different ways and that simple strategies could significantly improve my overall learning ability? I just learnt differently!!! Most of us learn and thrive under different circumstances. So why are we so intent on only teaching and living only ‘one way’? Perhaps because it’s easier in the beginning for all of us to follow one system. But ultimately it’s hurting a lot of us who are the square pegs being forced to fit into the round holes. There’s more than one way to thrive!
