I have been away for a while but Snowflake has never left my side. Thereby leaving me with no choice but to dive into the system and see what it is truly about. The emails are quite catchy and full of promises. I am a lover of all things digital and learning about new technologies really makes me happy. I am excited to see what this platform has in store. Frank Slootman is retiring as CEO of Snowflake. He grew the business from $4B to $75B in 5 years. Our conversation with him is one of our favorites. Here’s a taste of why and what makes him special: 1. I have never been too early to fire people. I have been too late. 2. Narrow the focus. If you have 5 or 10 priorities, you have 0. 3. Put as many resources on as few things as possible. 4. Operate through influence, not rank and title. Flatten your org chart. 5. Raise the bar. 6. Confrontation is our culture. People settle for the status quo. Fight it constantly. 7. Wage war on incrementalism. Pretend you have nothing, build something dazzling. 8. Trust is everything. Show your stakeholders you have their back. 9. Interviews are overrated. Talk to everyone who has worked with a candidate before. Do your homework. 10. Your sales problem is probably a product problem. 11. Sales is a highly repeatable, scalable, predictable process. 12. If you master and control your own distribution, you become insanely powerful. 13. Growth is not a mystery, it’s mechanical. 14. Keep pushing the boundaries of how fast you can grow. Never settle for good enough. 15. Past glories are poor feeding. 16. Re-prioritize all of the time. Work on the highest value task. Complete it, move on. Build momentum. 17. Never take shortcuts. 18. Playbooks don’t work. Think for yourself and understand things as they are. Every situation is different. 19. Amp it Up.

This week I celebrated 4 years at Snowflake how the founders would appreciate 🎿⛷🏔. I wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on my time at Snowflake so far. Yes I know Snowflake is the bunny hill and that wasn’t where I spent my time but I still wanted the sign ❄️. (Insert ease of use analogy here). In 2019 Matt Walk called to say Snowflake was starting a public sector team. It took me a few months and I ended up starting on the first day of the Covid lockdown. To build a state and local government and education business we had to: 1. Establish the channel to get on state contract schedules. 2. Navigate regulatory compliance to support sensitive workloads. 3. Enable partners to take a chance on a new technology in SLED markets. And most importantly… 4. Earn the trust and business of our government customers! Fast forward 4 years and Snowflake is widely used by the public sector in Texas and Arkansas, and I finished the 2024 fiscal year as the #1 performer in SLED. 4 years is a long time in tech, especially through the hyper growth, pre-ipo to publicly traded entprise software giant. This has been the adventure of my career and I owe that to best team, partners, and customers for making it possible! I’m looking forward to continuing Snowflake’s commitment to the public sector!
