Pretty amazing video of a United States Marine Corps Master Seargent saluting his son who was just commissioned. This is a good video of why we serve. Infrastructure Masons Compass Datacenters #veterans #veteransupport #veteranshelpingveterans

Prior to my commissioning day, now 48 years ago, I went to the bank and purchased three silver dollars. There is a tradition of presenting a silver dollar to the first enlisted person to render your first salute. Why three? My dad was a WWII soldier sitting in the audience at the commissioning ceremony. True to my expectations, he couldn't wait until I got outside. He jumped out of his seat and snapped a salute as we were marching out the aisle of the auditorium. He immediately claimed first salute and expected his silver dollar, which I gladly provided. Then, the newly commissioned officers marched straight outside and "got in our first line" to exchange a salute with the ROTC cadre SGM. He ordered all other enlisted cadre to stay away from the commissioning site that day. He collected at least thirty silver dollars. Unfortunately I cannot recall who, when or where I returned my first real and unstaged salute. I just wanted to continue the tradition with someone I didn't know. This tradition is a good one to keep going.

I also had the honor of pinning my son in the United States Marine Corps, for the very first time. I was in my dress blues and I was able to give my son his first salute. This truly is an honor and something I will never forget. My son is now a Major in the USMC and just this weekend he received his Masters degree at the Naval Postgraduate School.

Thank each and every Marine, Solider, Airman, Sailor, and Coast Guard member for everything you do. Same to police, fire, EMT, dispatch, and everyone else that puts their life on the line every day so we as Americans can squabble about petty nonsense that “agitates” us on FOX or CNN.

I love this! I remember when my dad gave me my first salute--one of the proudest moments of my life! And it was his uncle, my great uncle and a retired Navy Captain and Naval aviator, who commissioned me. I looked in the audience and saw my dad, the stoic warrior, and his eyes moist with tears as I became a commissioned officer.

I had the honor of giving my daughter her first salute when she commissioned. I was so proud of her. I was very honored she asked me because I also have two sons in the military and she could have asked one of them, but she asked me.

My grandfather drove horses from Lansing to Camp Grayling in the 30’s as a T-sgt in Michigan Army Guard for annual training. He saw his son fly Huey’s and my Dad swore me in and commissioned my brother. Pictures from this event will make that young 2LT’s grandkids swell with pride. Thanks skipper.
