This years #internationalwomensday2024 is celebrating the theme #investinwomen which is recognised as a key way to spark change and speed the transition towards a healthier, safer and more equal world. You may see a different # for IWD going around- I have only just learnt that these are generated by a corporate backed organisation and are generally watered down and meaningless statements. So I am making sure we amplify the UN's message for IWD and wanted to reflect on what this means for Copperfinch and the work we do. As a women founded and directed company, and one that works primarily in the business of supporting personal and team growth/development, we also have the great privilege to work with many inspiring women (and men) who are committed to investing in themselves and in 'being the change they wish to see in the world'. As I reflect on the theme of #investinwomen a number of things come to mind:
1- we are an organisation that places a high value in investing in ourselves and our own learning and development. I believe this helps us to be better human beings, and more capable of acting in service of those we work with, with presence and humility.
2- we see #coaching, #facilitation and related approaches as important ways to help individuals and teams thrive and feel empowered to act with purpose and intention, which is critical for organisations working in the social change space.
3- one of our core values as an organisation is #fairness. We believe that investing in women is not just an economic imperative but also a human rights issue. In a world where growth is pursued at the expense of health, wellbeing and the planet (the consequences of which is disproportionately felt by women and girls), investing in women to feel more empowered, to engage in economic activities or be more entrepreneurial, and to show leadership in addressing the important issues that impact equality for all, is more important than ever.
As part of my own learning in this area, I am looking forward to joining the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) tomorrow for a session exploring the power of facilitation in economically empowering women:
