There’s never nothing to do when you are running your own small business. I see business owners working long, long hours, sending emails late into the night, early in the morning, at weekends, even when they’ve told me they’ll be on holiday. It’s relentless if you are committed to growing your business; it’s an always-on situation. Problem is, that leads to (at least) two unhelpful issues: 1.    Entrepreneur burnout 2.    Founder dependence If you don’t find ways to delegate some of your tasks, your business will suffer in the long run. You’ll be exhausted, unable to make good decisions and you’ll probably end up resenting your situation. You won’t be building a saleable asset because the business is too dependent on you to run it. Have you found yourself in this situation where you started your own business to get a better work-life balance only to find yourself run ragged and even more time-poor? Here’s the #1 difference between an employee and an entrepreneur mindset: who backs you. ➡️ When you’re an employee, your employer backs you. 💰You get paid for every hour you work, no matter what the output or value created. 📈If the project you’re working on falters or fails, you’re not in the red financially or reputationally. Your employer carries the risk on their balance sheet, and reaps the rewards when things go well. This is a perfectly sensible model, but it has a ceiling. ➡️ When you’re an entrepreneur - business owner, creator, consultant et al, you carry all the risk on YOUR balance sheet. 😓You only get paid for the value you create, which might require many hours of unpaid work 🧾If the project you’re working on falters or fails, you’re the one who pays. You open the possibility of reaping a large reward - or suffering the consequences of failure. You back yourself. 💪 Personally, I’ve always preferred to take options on my own stock. Monday - Friday 9 till 5 is a MYTH... I'm coming up to 15 years of having a payroll, other people who depend on me and that carries weight on your soul. It means you "never switch off". When others depend on you to pay their own bills, you have to turn up every day, with no excuses. I think the biggest misconception when starting your own business is that once you become your own boss, life gets easier. I think it's the opposite. That's not to say I don't enjoy it... There is something beautifully peaceful about working on a Saturday morning, no calls, no pressure, just time for creative work and free thinking. I find the same working after 10pm at night. Those quiet moments are where I can unlock a superhuman level of output. To all those out there taking advantage of every bit of time you can get, I see you and it all adds up in the end. This isnt "hustle p*rn", its just the reality of being a business owner.
