The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) recently published Strides in #sustainable #agricultural #intensification: contributions of the #Africa RISING Program (2011–2023), compiled and edited by IITA’s Jonathan Odhong  and our own Guy Manners. The groundbreaking Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING) Program encompassed three subregional projects in East and Southern Africa, the Ethiopian Highlands, and West and Central Africa. The Program was characterized by a freedom to follow research and development leads, enabled by USAID’s Feed the Future initiative. This helped the Program reach over a million farmers and other stakeholders over its two phases (2011–2016, 2016–2023). The End-of-Program report enumerates the success of the Program, including within the Sustainable Intensification Assessment Framework (SIAF), which draws out impact in five domains: #productivity, #economic, #environmental, #human and #social. The report then goes into greater detail on 18 case studies plus the Program’s mixed #farming #systems approach; key lessons learned in seven areas (M&E and data management, #governance, #gender, technology transfer, geospatial tools, #capacity-building, and #communications and knowledge management); and a final chapter about “passing the baton” onto the One CGIAR Initiative on Sustainable Intensification of Mixed Farming Systems. The report is a mine of information for all those seeking to intensify agricultural systems in #SubSaharan_Africa. ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, part of CGIAR, is updating its strategy. It was a pleasure to attend this meeting, hosted at the HQ of Jordan's National Agricultural Research Centre in Amman. Main question is how to strengthen food systems in drylands to accelerate towards the #SDGs. ICARDA’s new strategic approach will be of benefit to people in the MENA region, by providing practical and sustainable solutions to improve their #livelihoods. The Middle East and North Africa region experiences the consequences of #climatechange. #Water scarcity, #heat stress, extreme weather events – most recently the devastating #floods in #Lybia – are a testimony of the need to take immediate action. I am looking forward to continue working with ICARDA to address water scarcity in the region. 🇰🇪🤝🇩🇪 #Fullmoonrise over a farm at Mount #Kenya. I learned so much during the field trips this week. We visited farmers in Laykipia, Meru and Isiolo who have experiences with #waterharvesting and pumping systems. We met very innovative farmers. The local challenges are water scarcity and changing rainfall patterns due to #climatechange. 🌦There are more heavy rains and longer dry periods which are endangering a good harvest. Therefore the farmers a trying to harvest water in order to be able to irrigate their fields. ⛽️ An additional challenge are the high energy costs for electricity and petrol. I am learning how the farmers are already taking measures to improve their water security and food production. In the project #SPIS4FNS we will develop with our Kenyan and German partners to improve the planning for water harvesting systems in different climatic regions and with different rainfall patterns. This should be combined with #solar powered irrigation systems. The improved planning of water harvesting systems aims to avoid bad investments and incorporate climate change projections into the design process. The project #SPIS4FNS is sponsored by the @German Federal Ministry Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft in the program "Innovative Sustainable Production Systems", as part of the funding instrument "International Research Cooperation for Global Food Security" and coordinated by Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. At the 2023 Feed the Future Innovation Labs Regional Partners Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, research, government and industry partners from across the globe, including representatives from USAID, #FTFInnovationLabs, and CGIAR convened to share and discuss the global impacts of the region’s devastating drought, as well as innovative and transformative global approaches to research for climate change adaptation and mitigation, from forging new collaborative partnerships to empowerment and local leadership. Guest speakers included Mike Michener, Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID Bureau for Resilience and Food Security; Harry Kimtai, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Livestock Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in Kenya; and Sheila Roquitte, Deputy Mission Director for USAID Kenya and East Africa. Moderators included Rob Betram, Chief Scientist for USAID Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, and Jerry Glover, Deputy Director for USAID Center for Agriculture Led Growth. Many remarked upon the successful legacy of USAID-funded research and development sector partnerships between government and private sector. “Our collaborative work on research and development, is good for America, is also good for Africa,” said Roquitte, with a nod to the ILs in that, “the drought probably would've been a lot worse, had the work that you all are doing, not been thought about many, many years ago.” Kimtai shared a similar sentiment, “USAID remains our key development partner in supporting many critical sectors of our economy,” adding later, “Today, going around, we saw how important research is[...]. Sometimes you're constrained by resources, but if you have international collaborators, like USAID, Feed the Future, we can benefit from various innovations.” This short-video highlights these collaborative partnerships and the activities that took place throughout the conference week, from interviews with Kenyan and USAID government dignitaries, presentations given by global leaders and workshop days, to trips into the field to visit research laboratories and sites working to resolve the most pressing global challenges.
