Last week I had the honor of attending the memorial service for one of Atlanta’s most important cultural and business icons, Rico Wade. The culture part is obvious: as founder of the production trio Organized Noize, Rico is directly responsible for launching the music careers of OutKast, Goodie Mob, Cee-Lo Green, Future, Killer Mike, and Janelle Monae, plus the production of TLC’s Waterfalls (how many Grammys and record sales is that?!?!!) The business side is less obvious but as someone the same age as Rico from the same neighborhood, I’ve seen it up close. In hip hop, most of your employees, employers, contractors, vendors and business partners are people from your community. So as Rico was launching successful music artists, he was also launching countless careers for working musicians, managers, publicists, stylists, lawyers, movie producers, real estate professionals, etc etc from southwest Atlanta who may not have gotten a chance otherwise - including some of my classmates from Atlanta Public Schools and Hampton University. Proof: 30 years after the release of OutKast’s debut album, one of my tenants - who started out as an intern for Big Boi at Stankonia Studios - just won a Grammy for his work as a recording engineer on Killer Mike’s latest album. (Congrats again RENEGADE EL REY 🦅 🦅) Huge thank you to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens for recognizing Rico’s contributions by establishing the City of Atlanta Rico Wade Music Executive Training Program.
