From Trash to Treasure! 🌍♻️ Despite millions of Americans depositing their plastic waste into recycling bins, much of that waste, including flexible films, multilayer materials, and colored plastics, cannot be recycled cost-effectively. In fact, only 9% of plastics in the U.S. are actually re-used and are typically “low-value,” meaning the high costs of recycling do not necessarily yield good returns. University of Wisconsin (UW) – Madison has unveiled a new plastics #recycling method that turns #plasticwaste into high-value chemicals. Researchers estimate these processes will not only revolutionize plastics recycling, but could also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the conventional production of these industrial chemicals by roughly 60 percent. In this week’s edition of our #meettheteam series, we caught up with John Redshaw, Plastic Energy's Research Technologist. Find out more about his work here:   🟡 Tell me about your role I am a Research Technologist at Plastic Energy. My main responsibilities are optimising the yield of our plants and finding upcycling avenues for our products. This involves engaging with customers across many different industries to aid their sustainability goals by providing circular secondary raw materials. I have also worked to develop tools to better monitor and automate our production of TACOIL™.    🟡 Why did you choose to work for Plastic Energy? I previously spent 10 years working for an oil company, but felt my skills and interests were more aligned to working in the sustainability sector. I enjoy working on research which extends the lifecycle of plastics by creating value out of waste.   🟡 Why do you work in the chemical recycling field? Plastic is an incredibly versatile material with many uses. However irresponsible disposal, and a lack of circular design, have created a global plastic waste crisis. This has led to landfilling, and incinerating plastics for energy recovery. Instead of looking at waste plastic as rubbish, we need to reframe it as a resource. Chemical recycling enables this by returning waste plastic to a useable raw material, reducing crude oil extraction, and making societies more self-sufficient by harnessing the potential of their own waste. Chemical recycling is a technology the world must use and embrace to work towards a more sustainable future.

Plastics are essential in our world, as they enable innovation in 30% of the global economy and provide critical support in applications such as medical and food safety. However, addressing plastic waste is necessary to achieve a #circular world. Plantco once again reaffirms its commitment to protecting the planet and recycling at this crucial time.  Our CSR approach drives us every day to innovate and improve our practices for a more sustainable future. Our local partnerships enable us to offer products with a lower carbon footprint, and the reuse of waste enables us to have sustainable logistics.    Our partnership with SIMER - Syndicat Interdépartemental Mixte pour l'Équipement Rural (Syndicat Interdépartemental Mixte pour l'Équipement Rural Sud-Vienne) enables us to recycle local waste on an annual basis: 356 m³ of pallets, 2 m³ of cardboard, 12 m³ of mandrels, as well as our plastic and geotextile offcuts, reused for gravel/grass stabilization slabs.   With our ecological leadership, we play a proactive role in promoting industrial ecology via the EIT Sud Vienne association (Écologie Industrielle et Territoriale Sud-Vienne).   We regularly invest in the research and development of bio-sourced products, and integrate recycled materials into our plastic products.   Our energy self-sufficiency is ensured by hundreds of photovoltaic panels that power our machines, and our responsible printing is French and complies with FSC and 100% PEFC Certified standards.   Our sustainable logistics enable us to use gas-powered forklift trucks with a recycling system for empty bottles, and an agent supervises waste management. #environment

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝘁 “𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴” 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 Currently, the world produces 400 million tons of plastic waste each year. Only nine percent of it is recycled, and can be recycled only once or twice before ending up in landfills or incinerators. The UN figures clearly show that there is a need for action when it comes to the efficient use of resources through #recycling ♻ . The current approach alone will not achieve the goal. Shai Mangel, Ph.D., Head of Chemical Recycling at PreZero International, addressed this need for action at the “Closing The Loop With Recycling” Forum. His message: Currently only small fraction of the world plastics are being treated and can only be mechanically recycled twice before they are discarded. That's why #chemicalrecycling should be used as a complementary solution to #mechanicalrecycling in order to achieve the ambitious goals of less plastic waste and greater use of recyclates. In doing so, he relies on #cooperation along the entire value chain to leverage synergies, bring together expertise from different areas and achieve common goals, thus complementing mechanical #recycling. We’ve become too used to #Plastic products, and rapidly phasing out all single use plastics by 2030 will take a combination of actions in governance and policy. As of 2015, approximately 6300 metric tons of plastic waste had been generated, around 9% of which had been recycled, 12% incinerated, and the remaining 79% accumulated in landfills/the natural environment. Plastics are an increasingly important business model for the oil and fracked-gas industry as the world transitions to sustainable energy and transportation. The answer lies in extended producer responsibility, but is there still a role for our personal choices? More in my Substack. Link in comments.
