To all my former Maryland Foundation colleagues:  If you are funding housing outside the segregated barrier created by single-family zoning, consider funding your grantees to advocate for removing that number one barrier to expanding our housing base. It prevents them from developing affordable housing in over 70% (and often over 85%) of residentially zoned land. Make multi unit housing by-right for every nonprofit developer and make ADU’s by-right for every single homeowner. Ask your grantees how you can help them advocate for Missing Middle and ADU housing options. Law is a conservative and traditional industry. Depending on the firm you work at, the city you live in or the area of law that you practice there is a view by some that your practice and your personal life should remain separate. Others have strongly expressed to me their belief that your brand/marketing should conform with that of your firm and that you as a lawyer should NEVER be the focus of that branding. You are part of a firm and your firm or your practice group should be the only focus. I have always had a difficult time accepting any of this. It may be because I am solicitor whose files often involve an individual or a family or a small business. These are rarely one off files, with clients or their family members returning many times over the years. The relationships I form with these clients are more personal in nature than might be the case in other areas of law. I may also have difficulty with the keep it separate perspective because I grew up in small towns in a very large family. Words like community take on a deeper meaning; overlap between the various parts of life is common place. One of my primary reasons for moving to a smaller firm at the beginning of this year was to allow for more flexibility in how I approach the practice of law. In other social media forums, I have used an @friendlynlawyer user name (the "n" being for "neighbourhood") as a way to lean in on the community attachment that is an important part of my personal and professional identity. I don't want this to be separate. Ever. I am happy to have the freedom and support from my colleagues to do so. I have parked several practice ideas over the years that would allow me to directly link the work I do with the type of clients that I have and the communities that both I and they live in. Ideally, the work I do would have added meaning or benefit to those I work with or the communities that my clients come from. One of these ideas has found its time. My real estate practice has grown quickly this year. I want these exciting moments in my clients lives to be more than the transactional approach often attached to residential real estate. My idea: the launch of the Friendly Neighbourhood Community Fund! Tomorrow night, myself and 100+ family and friends will play bingo, sing karaoke and raise money for this fund. (https://lnkd.in/gwnipQ68 ) Set up through the Edmonton Community Foundation, this Fund has a stated purpose of helping to build community playgrounds, parks, gardens and other community gathering places. For every real estate deal that I work on going forward, I will donate a portion of my fees to this fund. As it grows, the projects I will be able to support will also grow. Purpose is an important part of my life and I cannot think of anything that will make me happier then being able to link part of my practice to building communities. I continue to move along some of my other parked ideas and look forward to sharing them as well soon.
