There is no better example of the dangers of both opinion-based decision making and wholesale site/app redesigns than what happened to the site Digg in 2010. For those not old enough to remember, Digg was once very similar to Reddit but far more popular. It was the place to be. In 2008, Google was in the final stages of conversations to buy it for $200m. But there were problems with Digg and the way people were able to abuse the system to artificially promote content. So the owners went into their black box to 'solve' the problems. This resulted in a wholesale and fundamental redesign which was conceived, built and then released with a bang in 2010. It was a disaster. What you see in the chart was afterwards referred to as 'the exodus' and is the reason that many will never have heard of this platform today. It was sold for $500k in 2014. Yes there were problems with Digg, but had the owners chosen to solve those problems iteratively and with real user testing and feedback, the story would have been incredibly different. #digitalexperience #productmanagement #ecommerce #productleadership
