The world’s love of AirPods Pro affirms the conviction with which I & others sacrificed to deliver excellence during its engineering. As with all things Apple, the product concept, project schedule, and development effort pushed the envelope past practicality. We were never quite so foolish to aim for the impossible, but we were definitely crazy enough to practically disregard industry bounds & norms. As such, our audacious efforts didn’t always hit the mark. In such cases, we had to pivot to backup options that came with sometimes significant tradeoffs. Upholding the product & company standards was then rarely easy & often required intense personal sacrifices. When delayed ANC testing ended up revealing unanticipated artifacts with our ambitious custom amplifier, long past the point of a silicon fix, the only options were: fail & delay the launch or succeed at all costs. In this case, my passion & love for the product pushed me past my personal limits, essentially to my breaking point. This was a conscious & willful effort, and fortunately one that resulted in a successful outcome. My depletion was renewable, and I knew it. But I was also acutely aware that pushing my family past breaking points might be less recoverable. This was a line I was not willing to cross, and that was not negotiable. 2020 was an intense year, especially for dual working parents of young children. After delivering AirPods Pro in Fall 2019, I was given practically no time to catch my breath in delivering AirPods Max in Fall 2020 & AirPods 3rd gen in Fall 2021. I knew I wanted to see these products through, but my conviction then expanded beyond the products to include the human costs of product development & the importance of an inclusive team culture. I burned powerful bridges and put my career on the line to speak out against acts & instances of perceived wrongs. Rather than retribution, I was seeking conversation. The aggressiveness of the corporate reaction, the ruthlessness of the punitive & retaliatory tactics… frankly, shocked me. As traumatic as this all was for me, I had no regrets at the time and have no regrets now. Sadly, unlike my personal sacrifices to engineer a successful product, my personal sacrifices to cultivate a more inclusive team were ultimately unsuccessful. Yet, despite the hardship, this tumultuous time very powerfully catalyzed one of the most significant personal transformations I’ve ever undergone. In effect, we each have a tremendous capacity to grow from hardship. This growth is not coupled to success or failure of the outcome, and neither is it coupled to whether the hardship was personally driven or externally forced. I might not go so far as to say that you can’t grow without hardship, but I do believe that all hardship can be used to fuel growth. However, there is one extremely important caveat to this: be mindful of the bounds that may entail irrecoverable negative ramifications. #tech #culture #growth

The AirPods Pro are a product that really really surprised me - maybe the first real surprise after the iPod Gen 3 - and they improve my day-to-day life significantly. I use them often as an example for: forget the standards, if you have a good hunch, go for it. It is unsurprising for me that someone had to ‚pay‘ for these efforts. Although there are some bugs (dust collection in the case, diaper smell of the tips, occasional radio problems), it is such a cool product.

Apple did something noble by owning up to their mistake with a Service Programme for the AirPods Pro. However, it seems like their “newer” batches haven’t solved the initial audio quality issues (the “rattling” drivers). Looks like Apple is trying to sweep the problem under the rug and pull back on the Service Programme for their devices that remain defective. Shady practises, shitty products, poor engineering. Sorry to hear that you felt unsupported as an employee. On the flip side, it seems like you inadvertently had a pulse on the problematic experiences Apple has been plaguing their users with.

My interview at apple was one of the least professional experiences in my life. He repeatedly told me I was wrong about the military job identifier for Intel analysts (which I let drop as it was irrelevant, but we were both on computers, he had the chance to not be wrong). He had clearly made his decision about the role prior to speaking to me (that decision being not to hire anyone for a role he clearly didn't respect for a project that I had rightly predicted only had about 10 months of legs under it).  Steve Jobs was human garbage, so who could be surprised his company is filled with execs exactly like him.

I think many can relate to your experience, especially when pushing for well-intended empathetic consideration only to recieve a retaliatory reaction. Often corporate HR and leadership who are disconnected from teams and projects will focus on black and white enforcement of rules and regulations, not employee well being and results.
