165 years ago today - Jun 4, 1859 U.S. army officer writes: "Saw two kills today from the scene of the Mountain Meadows Massacre [-] One of them was shot through[,] the ball entering the back part of the head and coming out near the right temple. The other had two gashes on the top as if from a sharp knife. They were of young persons." [The Mormon Hierarchy - Extensions of Power by D. "A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week" - General George S. Patton, US Army, WWII As this says, certainly an executed average plan is better than a perfect (seemingly!) plan which is never executed & tested. #planning #agileplanning

Blood and war are inextricably linked. The military has learned and relearned this lesson in every war over the past century. Read this article, recommended by the Chief of Staff of the Army, where Lt. Col. Max Ferguson writes about how combat casualty survival on the battlefield depends on a well-resourced and well-trained blood capability. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gsZhu85Z

Leadership begins with EXAMPLE. What is the new Sergeant Major of the Army teaching not just future officers but senior leaders? ⬇️ Trust is built in the trenches. ⬇️ Many people try to build a process or force a culture to establish a team of trust. This is great but…it’s not going to last if the model is not maintained by the senior leaders. The Sergeant Major of the Army is modeling what he wants to see. No matter how high we climb let’s make sure we stay in the trenches. 👊Continue Mission
What does the new Sergeant Major of the Army do on day 1 of the position? Walk 14 miles and set the example for over 1100 future officers (all before noon). #GoArmy #BeAllYouCanBe #ArmyLife #sma #armystrong

Unidentified Soldiers Of The 33rd United States Colored Troops The 33rd was organized on January 31, 1863, or February 8, 1864, as 1st South Carolina Volunteers Colored Infantry. Attached to U. S. Forces, Port Royal Island, South Carolina, 10th Corps, Dept. of the South, to April, 1864. Mustered out January 31, 1866 "No officer in this regiment now doubts that the key to the successful prosecution of this war lies in the unlimited employment of black troops. Their superiority lies simply in the fact that they know the country, while white troops do not, and, moreover, that they have peculiarities of temperament, position, and motive which belong to them alone. Instead of leaving their homes and families to fight they are fighting for their homes and families, and they show the resolution and sagacity which a personal purpose gives. It would have been madness to attempt, with the bravest white troops, what I have successfully accomplished with the black ones. Everything, even to the piloting of the vessels and the selection of the proper points for cannonading, was done by my own soldiers." — Excerpt from February 1, 1863 report by Colonel T. W. Higginson, commander of the First Regiment South Carolina Volunteers (Union) after the January 23 - February 1, 1863 Expedition from Beaufort South Carolina, up the Saint Mary’s River in Georgia and Florida. Some people think these men were forced to go to war. But make no mistake: Many did it because they were brave, wanted to protect their families and country, and hoped to be respected for their actions. #memorialday2024 #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryisamericanhistory Credit: American Black History - Old Photos

History in 60 Seconds: What do you know about Roman Legions? The Roman legion was the backbone of the powerful Roman army for centuries. Here's a breakdown of some key points: 1) Elite Infantry: For most of the Roman Empire's history, legions were the elite heavy infantry of the Roman army. 2) Citizen Soldiers: Early legions were composed entirely of Roman citizens. After reforms by Marius in 107 BC, citizenship wasn't a requirement, but it remained a prestigious role. 3) Size and Organization: The size of legions varied over time, but typically consisted of around 5,200 men during the height of the Empire. They were structured into smaller units called cohorts, centuries, and contubernia. For comparison, a US Army brigade consists of a few battalions and anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers. A colonel is generally in command. Video: Historic Vids
