Building a Strong Culture for Exceptional Customer Service ⛳️ The importance of a strong company culture cannot be overstated. It's the heartbeat of the organisation, influencing everything from employee satisfaction to, surprisingly, the quality of customer service. When kindness, empathy, and putting our people first are at the core of our culture, an amazing trickle-down effect ensues, leading to excellence in customer. In our workplace, we live by this principle. We encourage open communication and kindness. Our team knows they can count on each other for support and constructive feedback, and this fosters an environment where everyone feels valued and appreciated. It's no secret that happy employees are more likely to go the extra mile to make customers happy. The smile you receive from our staff is not just a mask; it's a reflection of their genuine contentment with their work culture. After all, as Richard Branson put it, "If you take care of your employees, they will take care of your customers." In the world of greenkeeping, where the maintenance of golf courses is both physically and mentally demanding, the impact of culture on mental health and performance cannot be understated. Unfortunately, the greenkeeping industry has often fallen short in this regard, with many horror stories of micromanagement and poor treatment. The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) published an article highlighting the pressing issue of mental health in greenkeeping. The article drew a link between a culture of support and mental well-being. When greenkeepers feel valued and trusted, they perform better and, crucially, are more resilient in the face of challenges. In our greenkeeping team, we've embraced a culture of kindness, respect, and trust. We empower our greenkeepers to make decisions and foster an environment where they can openly discuss their concerns, ideas, and feedback. This has not only improved the mental well-being of our team but has also resulted in exceptional course maintenance, leading to a highly satisfied community of golfers. In conclusion, building a strong work culture around kindness, empathy, and putting our people first is a winning strategy for delivering excellent customer service. It's time for the greenkeeping industry to recognise the transformative power of culture and implement changes that promote mental health and performance. As the saying goes, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast," and our experience has shown that a culture of kindness serves as a recipe for both happy employees and delighted customers.

As always MURTEC was a great event. It should come as no surprise that what I enjoy most is connecting with the people (including our competitors 😉). For me, the keynote speaker Will Guidara, author of "Unreasonable Hospitality" was one of the highlights. Of course, he talked about technology, innovation, and automation which are critical in improving the customer experience especially in the multi-unit restaurant space. However, what I enjoyed most about his speech was when he talked about their “pre-meal” gathering with the restaurant staff to prepare for that evening’s meal service. "Pre-meal" was not about reviewing menu specials or sharing mundane details - it was about team building and employee engagement which, in his words "ultimately fuels a culture of cooperation and excellence leading to an AWESOME guest experience". I feel like everyone is so busy today which unfortunately results in us taking so much for granted. We forget that simple acts of communication, engagement and the sense of inclusion can lead to an environment that will naturally and genuinely translate to AWESOME experiences. So, on this Friday, instead of my usual post tying things back to how Hughes can assist with the technology and solutions to improve the customer experience, I will simply wish everyone a happy weekend! Let's take a moment to appreciate the people around us and the impact we can have on each other's lives.
