An FOI investigation, conducted by Vape Superstore, has revealed hotspots for illegal vape sales in the UK. The study, which looked at data from more than 70 respondents, found that 1,284 businesses had been identified as stocking illegal vapes across 50+ surveyed local authorities between January 2023 and February 2024. If the vape industry’s proposed retail and distributor licensing scheme was in force, these businesses could have faced a collective £12.84 million in fines – if each was found guilty and received the maximum penalty of £10,000. They would also have been banned from selling vapes for two years and the money generated from fines would be used to support further enforcement. Let’s back Trading Standards with adequate funding. Let’s stop illegal vape sales for good. Vaping-related products typically account for 15%-18% of a retail dispensary’s sales. Industry experts report: “Some policies don’t clearly state that they specifically exclude vape products. Instead, the policy will only exclude vape products that are made overseas by foreign manufacturers, where, unbeknownst to brokers or their insureds, the majority of vaping products are made”. Our Managing Director Robert Sidebottom explains why retailers must take accountability and contribute to tackling the scourge of illicit vapes that are flooding the market. ⚠️ Research we have undertaken has already demonstrated the lack of enforcement activity by Trading Standards, due to insufficient resources and funding. 🚨 Choosing reputable distributors and keeping detailed records on age refusals are two important ways that retailers can really step up and make a difference. 💡 We all need to work together to protect the UK vape sector. 27% of retailers are selling vapes to under 18s Stemming from the government’s £3m in funding earlier this year, Trading Standards put Operation Joseph into action to enforce the rules on vaping and tackle illicit vapes and underage sales, carrying out a series of test purchases in vape retailers, including convenience stores. There were 1,199 test purchases carried out and 27.3% were caught selling to under 18s. Operation Joseph has also involved Trading Standards teams carrying out raids to tackle the sale of illegal vapes with the article highlighting the seizure of oversized vapes up to 14ml capacity (9000 puffs). #illegalvape https://lnkd.in/ek_bDR4W
