Published today in JAMA Internal Medicine - Truveta Research comparative effectiveness study on Mounjaro vs. Ozempic. Now peer-reviewed, looks at over 18,000 patients split between the two drugs (the clinical trial with only 700 patients should report out sometime next year).

Using propensity matching, below study used real-world data from EHRs to compare weight loss between tirzepatide and semaglutide. Overall, it seems tirzepatide causes more weight loss. In general, weight loss was more effective for both drugs in non-diabetics than diabetics. Also slightly more than half discontinue the drugs at a year due to side effects, with the rate being higher for tirzepatide. Tirzepatide is a different compound than semaglutide, which likely accounts for the difference. It is a receptor agonist (“turns on”) GLP-1 and GIP and is sometimes called a “twincretin” as a result. “Incretins” are compounds/hormones that push beta cells to make insulin. Tirzepatide is essentially a synthetic version of the human GIP hormone. Unlikely we’ll ever get head-to-head trials but this is an interesting way to try and get at that using real world data. It is certainly a clinically plausible conclusion but, strictly speaking, hypothesis generating. At any rate, both drugs work well, and have a role to play in battling diabetes and obesity.

A recent meta-analysis published in "Nature" examined the efficacy of PPIs in treating non-specific chronic cough, revealing a slight reduction in cough severity. This aligns with some previous findings, but contrasts with other studies that showed inconsistent results. Notably, the benefit appears more significant in patients with abnormal reflux confirmed by pH monitoring. This highlights the importance of objective reflux testing before prescribing PPIs, ensuring that only patients likely to benefit from the treatment receive it, thereby optimizing therapeutic outcomes and minimizing unnecessary medication use. Latin abbreviations are a great way to condense your text. But some scientific and medical authors interchange them or use them incorrectly. Here's a list of common Latin abbreviations, their meanings, and some examples to help you get them right every time: ✍️ cf = compare Example: Although the analysis supports that the drug improves heart rate, several studies reported differences in the drug's effects on hypertension (cf, Smith 2021, Miller 2023). ✍️ eg = for example Example: Patients reported several flu-like symptoms (eg, cough, fever, chills). ✍️ et al = and others Example: Smith et al developed an intervention for patients with breast cancer. ✍️ etc = and so forth Example: The clinician noted signs of a bone fracture (pain, swelling, bruising, etc). ✍️ ie = that is Example: The study identified national acute care or critical access hospitals (ie, nonemergency hospitals). ✍️ vs = versus Example: The researchers compared the effects of the drug on the control vs treatment groups. #medicalwriting #science #medicine
