In the workplace, the barriers faced by disabled employees are frequently overlooked or outright denied. In fact, the very existence of disabled workers is overlooked. Employers widely underestimate the prevalence of disability—while 25 percent of employees self-identify as having a disability or medical condition that limits a major life activity, most companies report that just 4 to 7 percent of their employees are people with disabilities. This perception, in part, is the reason for underinvestment in disability support. If pragmatic decision-makers do not understand the true number of people in the disability community, disability advocates have a hard time making an argument for developing support systems. #HumanResources #management #disability #inclusion #DisabilityInclusion #talent #neurodiversity #DisabilityRights #ableism #NeurodiversityAtWork #leadership #ChronicIllness #NDEAM #Accessibility #MentalHeath #diversity #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityEmployment By Ludmila Praslova, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, Âû https://lnkd.in/gWS8HPY3

Recently, we sat down with Maura Schiefelbein, SVP, People at accesso®, to dive deep into the realm of disability inclusion in the workplace. What emerged was a powerful narrative busting many prevalent myths. “When we talk about disability inclusion, it’s not about the cost. It’s about valuing every individual and realizing that the right accommodations can unlock immense potential.” - Maura Schiefelbein. Many organizations wrestle with misconceptions, often assuming that accommodating people with disabilities is a burdensome expense. But the insights from our conversation with Maura paint a vastly different picture. The Reality? As underscored by the 2023 Department of Labor report, nearly 50% of accommodations for individuals with disabilities come at zero cost to employers. And for the remaining? The average expense is a mere $300.For accesso®, the journey of disability inclusion is beyond mere compliance. It signifies transformative change, championing an environment where every individual, regardless of their abilities, is empowered to flourish. Our enlightening sit-down with Maura underscored the fact that it’s not just about making room at the table, but ensuring everyone feels valued and heard. And, as Maura so eloquently puts it, it’s about unlocking the hidden potential within. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gh9vv3SJ #InclusiveLeadership #DisabilityInclusion #accessoStory #DEIinAction
