The way we speak and the words that we use when we communicate with people is extremely important. It is key to furthering positive, person-centred and inclusive discussions around topics like disability and inclusion which can often be very complicated. The National Health Service have created a reasonably straightforward ‘go to’ guide for making the information we deliver and the words that we use when communicating more accessible to our target audience. I’ve attached the link below, so anybody who wants to have a read of usage of words and the most up-to-date, thinking around these can do so. I’d be really interested to know what is something that you come across frequently in your respective lines of work that bothers you the most when it comes to the usage of words around special educational needs disability and inclusion? #inclusion #disabilities #send #nhs #communicationtips #neurodiversity #autism

One in 7 people have a #disability (WHO, World Report on Disability, 2011), 70-80% of those disabilities are invisible (UK-Parliament, Invisible Disabilities in Education and Employment Report, 2023). That makes 10 percent of the population having a #HiddenDisability. In their daily lives, people with an #InvisibleDisability are often met with disbelief. I drew this comic based on my experience with being #autistic, but from my interactions with people with other hidden disabilities, I know it is shared by many. As an autistic adult I often swing back and forth between my so called 'high-functioning'(not my words) high-masking self, and the overloaded, can't do anything self. In both situations, the reality behind the scenes is more complex than what people tend to see. So here's my call to taking people seriously and taking actual interest in how they experience life, rather than making blank statements based on momentary appearance. #Neurodiversity #Autism #Disability #Sketchnote #Comic
