A FEW WORDS OF ADVICE FOR TODAY’S JOB SEEKER: Recently, I participated on a panel to interview job candidates for a role in communications. Out of 75 candidates, surprisingly few had experience with generative AI tools. According to a recent Forbes Advisor survey, 64% of businesses believe AI will help increase their productivity in 2024 and beyond. This demonstrates the growing confidence in AI’s potential to transform business operations. Understanding generative AI is crucial for job seekers in today's competitive market. Candidates who can quickly assess and implement AI tools will undoubtedly stand out. Here are a few tips to get you started: 1) 📰 Follow AI news and trends: Start wherever you are by reading online articles, watching YouTube videos, or listening to podcasts about AI. Find some that appeal to you. For me, I cannot go a week without listening to my three favorites: "The Artificial Intelligence Podcast," hosted by Paul Roetzer and Mike Kaput; "Hard Fork,” hosted by Kevin Roose and Casey Newton; and “The AI Breakdown,” hosted by Nathaniel Whittemore. 2) 🛠 Experiment with tools: Explore free large language models to learn how to prompt and use generative AI tools. These may include Google Gemini, Meta AI’s LLaMA, or OpenAI’s ChatGPT 3.5. These models can be accessed through platforms like Hugging Face, GitHub, and directly from the organizations that developed them. Users can explore these models to get hands-on experience with generative AI and understand their capabilities. (NOTE: Remember not to input personal information as these companies use your data for training.) You can also enroll in free or affordable online courses on platforms like Coursera, edX, or Udacity. These courses often include hands-on projects that can help you build practical skills. 3) 🔍 Research and inquire about AI policies: Investigate the AI standards and guidelines of the companies you're applying to (usually found on company websites) and incorporate this knowledge into your interview to show your proactive approach. During interviews, inquire about the company's stance on generative AI. Companies not yet using AI will soon need to adopt it to stay competitive. If they aren't using it yet, demonstrate your awareness of technological advancements. 4) 💡 Build a portfolio: Create a portfolio showcasing your AI projects. This could include examples of text generation, data analysis, or any other applications you've worked on. This can be a powerful tool during job interviews. 5) 🤓 Stay curious and hopeful: Finding the right job may take some time, but immersing yourself in AI and experimenting with its tools will enrich your skill set and showcase your commitment to continuous learning and innovation. Your proactive efforts will set you apart and open doors to exciting opportunities. Best wishes on your job search!   #AI #GenerativeAI #JobSeekers #CareerDevelopment #FutureOfWork
