Equipping managers with evidence-based team development strategies | Champion of interprofessional collaboration | Patient Advocate | Let's build high performing teams together!
49% of us preferred “interpersonal skills.” “People skills” and “foundational skills” were the second and third most selected choices. When I think of interpersonal skills, I think about 1️⃣ conflict management 2️⃣ communication 3️⃣ teamwork 4️⃣ empathy What else should we add to the list? Regardless of the adjective, these are “skills” which require motivation to learn, knowledge and practice. Interprofessional team members need to develop shared mental models about interpersonal skills and the prioritization of them in their work.
You know my feelings about this term! I spend a lot of time working in faculty development and clinician educator training helping to improve communications and presentation skills. They are necessary, foundational, and essential as healthcare professionals and health professions educators progress in their professional development. Individual needs will vary, but foundationally, there are a set of skills that are not "soft" but necessary. I think the original use of the term was a mistake, and one that perpetuated.
Speaking up skills

1wHmm…what about compassion? I ask this because you build high performing teams. Are high performing teams emphatic or are they compassionate? I’m asking because I have no clue! I’ve been doing the Healthy Minds Innovations meditation this year and they have a whole section on compassion.
