I'm honored to have been invited by the Attorney General to speak on behalf of Virginia car dealers at yesterday's press conference announcing Governor Youngkin's decision to abandon California's vehicle emissions rules. As a new car dealer passionate about electric vehicles, the Legislative Chair for Virginia Automobile Dealers Association (VADA), and a member of the Nissan Motor Corporation EV Advisory Committee, I believe in a balanced approach to our environmental goals. While there’s no denying that EVs are the future, it's clear we first need to address the lack of consumer demand, improve our infrastructure, and ensure affordable options for everyone. Returning to federal standards gives us the flexibility to innovate and adapt to Virginia's unique needs. To be clear, this isn't about resisting progress; it's about ensuring every Virginian can participate in this transition. With the Governor's and Attorney General's leadership, I believe we can create the demand for cleaner technologies through education and incentives that make sense for our citizens. #ElectricVehicles #AutomotiveIndustry #EVFuture #Virginia

Ohio One Step Closer to Consumer Freedom in Vehicle Market 🚨✅ In a significant victory for consumer freedom, the Ohio General Assembly has passed SEMA-supported legislation ensuring Ohioans, not the government, decide which vehicles best suit their needs. The bill, H.B. 201, prohibits any state or local government entity from restricting the use or sale of motor vehicles based on their power source, including internal combustion engines (ICE). 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eywy3w6s

Mark Emerson, a California native and Senior Director at Dezenhall, says, “If there was ever a moment to buy a 1969 Chevelle SS, now is the time,” in regard to California’s new aggressive plan to crackdown on speeding. Mark’s thoughtful analysis discusses some challenges for successfully implementing the new measures. “Senator Scott Wiener's bill proposing mandatory speed ‘governors’ on all new cars sold in the state sparked significant pushback, reflecting the ingrained car culture in the state. The legislation addresses the alarming toll of traffic fatalities, which claimed nearly 40,000 lives nationwide in 2023. Authorities and police struggle to control drivers’ behavior and are now turning to private companies to enforce safer driving practices. Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems use advanced technologies to detect and regulate vehicle speeds. However, implementing such measures in California, the nation's most populous state and largest car market, raises significant challenges. Integrating ISA technologies into millions of new vehicles sold annually presents a formidable task. The success of this initiative hinges not only on widespread acceptance and use by drivers but also on the cooperation of private companies to develop and implement these technologies, along with stringent regulatory oversight from the state.” https://lnkd.in/ewxACUdV

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares just TERMINATED an electric vehicle (EV) mandate from California that was being forced onto everyone in the country using statutory schemes concocted at the federal level. The influx of EVs over the past ten years was not driven by market demand, but rather by stipulations generated by a bunch of controlling sycophants in California, who think they are saving the planet and know what’s best for each person. Now, for Virginians, the EV mandate will expire at the end of 2024, and automakers can go back to making powerful, off-the-grid engines, without the threat of fines for manufacturers, dealers and consumers. Other states are expected to follow suit and restore freedom of choice for the people. https://lnkd.in/gQAbuE4b

EVs and alternative propulsion choices are here! Is your dealership front line ready to pivot to becoming a trusted advocate for all of them for the consumer? Also work closely w/ TED INGS FIXED OPS ROUNDTABLE
ARE CAR DEALERS (meaning prime decision makers) POLITICALLY CONFLICED WHEN IT COMES TO ELECTRIC VEHICLE BUYERS? As a follow-up to my post below, it may appeal "logical" that CAR DEALERS would not be politically conflicted when it came to fulfilling a customers needs... irregardless of whether that customer was EV or ICE ''interested'. But you know, with this politically charged world we find ourselves in...who knows how deep the political biases extend? It's a fact that... "...Car dealers generally favored Republicans in the past, but the 2012 cycle marked the biggest lean to the right since at least 1990, with 85 percent of its cash going to conservatives. That may have been in part a reaction to the Obama administration's fuel economy standards. The industry opposes new miles per gallon regulations - especially when coming from the Environmental Protection Agency and not from Congress - and NADA has claimed that prices will dramatically increase, leading to job losses. The industry's lobbying expenditures in 2015, the last full year for which we have data, were the highest they've been since the Center for Responsive Politics began charting these disbursements in 1998. NADA footed just under $4 million of the $4.8 million bill - the association's largest outlay ever - lobbying predominantly on auto financing." https://lnkd.in/gxAbetU8. And comments?

My hope is that dealership front lines are careful not to pre-qualify car buyers/maintainers via political affiliation! A TRUE STORY! During the delivery of our last vehicle the salesman happened to make a very negative remark about the then current president. To which my normally reserved wife quickly remarked back...WE DON'T WANT TO HEAR THAT POLITICAL STUFF! As you might can tell...there was a very quick "shut up" on the part of that salesperson! We're witnessing a great many both positive and negative comments these days about EVs from those in the retail auto industry. That's certainly everyone's right...but I hope the smart front lines of retail auto don't presume political persuasion when a shopper shows an interest (just an interest) in EVs. Drivers are going to be taking a back seat to big government if the Biden administration green lights California’s ban on sales of new gas cars & moves forward with EPA and DOT regs that aim to eliminate gas, diesel and traditional hybrid vehicles. Consumers deserve to know the truth about these policies and their endgame before any regs are finalized. That’s why we’re launching a new ad, “Back Seat” to spread the word.

Bill Ford’s speach is a testament of how EVs are creating divisions among our already politically divided culture. With blue states wanting more, and fast EV transformation, and Red states treating EVs like the vaccine mandate, from the federal government, as a top down economic policy. We may just end up with a mish mash of EVs and ICE, plus everything in between. One thing for sure, it’s going to affect the goals for a 100% EV future, as most of the OEMs are aiming to have by 2030.

„And yet, electric vehicles are the fastest-growing segment of the auto industry. Sales of electric vehicles, trucks and S.U.V.s hit a record last year, reaching 1.2 million for the first time, bringing the share of electric vehicles in the United States vehicle market to 8.5 percent of new auto registrations. While growth is slowing, this year is expected to set another record, analysts have said. But the boom is not happening everywhere. In California, which leads the nation in terms of the number of charging stations, 40 percent of new cars registered in San Jose last year were electric. But in Detroit, the country’s automobile capital, they accounted for only 3 percent and even less in Buffalo and Bismark, N.D.“ #electrification #electromobility #futureofmobility
