The fourth and fifth types of drug interactions. Medications are intended to provide benefits, cure diseases, and manage medical conditions. However, given certain circumstances –  drug interactions can occur that may change how or if a drug works or if it is likely to cause problematic side effects. Historically there have been three main types of drug interactions: - Drug-drug: a reaction between two or more drugs - Drug-food: a reaction between a drug and a food or beverage - Drug-condition: a reaction that occurs when taking a drug for one problem adversely affects another medical condition. The fourth and fifth type of drug interactions are drug-gene interactions and drug-drug-gene interactions. - Drug-gene: is an association between a drug and a genetic variant that may affect a patient’s response to the drug and their risk of experiencing an adverse drug reaction. This is where it gets messy…. - Drug-drug-gene: *results when a drug-drug interaction overlaps with a drug-gene interaction. *often referred to as phenoconversion. *The genotype predicted phenotypic expression - is modified. Drug interactions of all types are concerning and may lead to reduced medication efficacy and/or serious adverse drug reactions. Pharmacists are uniquely qualified to conduct comprehensive medication management consultations, determine pertinent drug interactions and assist in optimizing medications for patients. #pharmacists #druginteractions #pgx #precisionmedicine #phenoconversion

If you are not familiar with tianeptine, you should know that it is easily accessible in most states under brand names like Tianaa, Neptune’s Fix, and more. Use of tianeptine alone or in combination with other substances or prescription drugs can complicate patient management and increase their risk of drug interactions and harm. Tianeptine’s activity at opioid receptors helped it gain its nickname of “gas station heroin.” Testing for tianeptine in the healthcare setting can help with educating patients, as they may not voluntarily report use, and it can also help inform treatment decisions. 🔍 Exploring Pharma's Focus on Rare Diseases! 🔍 Did you know that PharmaProjects defines a rare disease as one with a prevalence of 1 in 2,000 people in the EU or affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the US? This equates to around 1 in 1,600 people. Figure 13 illustrates the remarkable growth in the number of individual rare diseases being targeted by drug development. By the end of 2023, this number soared to 761, with slightly more new additions throughout the year compared to the previous one.
