Lithium-Ion vs Solid State Batteries-excellent article on the key differences. Solid State Batteries are: •More safe •More dense per unit volume thus can travel further •Charge rapidly • Unfortunately too expensive at this time. But so was Wind, PV and Lithium at one time.

EV battery mileage may be getting a boost, thanks to a new innovative and cost-effective approach by researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory! 🚗 Researchers have pioneered a way to synthesize single-crystal, high-energy, #nickel-rich cathodes that might be a game-changer for electric vehicle batteries. Cathodes with more nickel greatly increase energy storage capacity, enabling longer EV range. However, conventionally produced nickel-rich cathodes degrade quickly. 🔎 With this new breakthrough research, and eliminating problematic boundaries between crystals, these new nickel-rich cathodes yield superior stability and energy density - meaning that the EV batteries are more stable, store more energy per charge, and withstand more charging cycles. 🔋 Teaming up with industry partners, PNNL aims to rapidly scale up this breakthrough to accelerate EV battery advancement. ‘The “solid” in a solid-state EV battery refers to a solid electrolyte. The technology was first explored in the 1800’s and you can probably tell what the problem is, right off the bat. A liquid EV battery can flex itself through numerous charging cycles before it runs out of steam. A solid material has no flex, at least not an ordinary, inexpensive solid material, which explains why 21st century researchers are still struggling to fine tune a 19th-century discovery. One key breakthrough occurred in June, when the Energy Department’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee took a closer look at a solid lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) electrolyte developed by the lab in the 1990’s. They always knew the solid electrolyte was more stable than its liquid cousins, they just didn’t know exactly why. Deploying a combo of reflectometry and electrochemistry, the research team determined that a nanoscale layer of about 70 atoms in thickness was the key to forming a stable interphase between LiPON and lithium. The team is already on to the next step, which involves adapting the layer to other types of solid-state electrolytes.’ https://lnkd.in/gNcv2mmw
