Great advice Tim. This reminds me of my boss. Almost 10/12 years back, in an elevator, feeling trapped with my boss. I blurted out, this project will not exist without you. He said "BS", we are all replaceable. Even me. No matter how much hard work I do, I will be replaceable, and so are you. And the mantra he gave me "You are a consultant, a contractor. Treat every single day as if it were last in this company". Sage advice which I follow to this day. It's not about the job title and even money but whom you work with that matters.

Here's a counter argument for you - this is a luxury belief. There is a massive cohort of the workforce who simply do not have the option to move between jobs to avoid a 'less than ideal' boss. They have responsibilities beyond their own idealised and actualised work life - things like a mortgage and dependants. The most important thing in your career isn't your boss. It's your behaviour. It's your principles. It's how you execute your day. That's all in your court. So whilst the post sounds great and the notification/comment crowd are out in force, in reality the advice is not practical for the majority.

Work for the organization and not for a person whoever that maybe. Align with the org goal, mission and vision. For example if your company is into solutions then ensure you understand the client problem and work towards solving it. Leaders will come and go and nowadays there are a lot of self proclaimed leaders. Avoid the trap, focus on growth, be humble and work hard.

Sometimes these aspirational posts can be so unrealistic and quite honestly fantasy based. I’d venture to say 75% of folks never had and still don’t get to choose who they report to, let alone be fussy about it. My current boss is phenomenal; but most people who actually work at organization day in and day out, even more so for those who work in HR know that being fussy about certain things could very well see you looking for a new job altogether. I understand the sentiment of the post and agree; and let’s not motivate people to go do something they can’t walk back from as we sit in some far off place counting our likes and impressions.
