Since graduating college in 2007, I have had many jobs. Even to this day, I work in TV, FinTech, radio, Payments, I’m running a basketball event in February in NY. But my favorite “job” has been being a dad. This past weekend I brought my son 9 year old “Chicago” Joe and my daughter 7 year old Rose with me on a road trip to call a college basketball game in Iowa. 4.5 hour drive to Northern Iowa University in Cedar Falls, Iowa. We got to stay at “fancy hotel” according to Rose in Iowa City. We had the best ever meal (chocolate chip pancakes) according to Joe at a Perkins restaurant. We listened to the Princeton/Yale basketball game on our drive there and Taylor Swift’s songs pumped energy into our mini van whenever the trip was starting to drag. I love every second of it! I didn’t really work this weekend, I was savoring every moment in my favorite job, being a dad.

2023 was a blast! Can’t wait for 2024!

I heard my former coach Craig Robinson tell me a story of “how my sister (Michelle) asked me to play basketball with now former President Obama and report back to her while they were dating. When I got him out on the court in a pickup basketball game, I saw his character traits. He was honest, hard working and team oriented. He had high integrity.” That story always stuck with me. I always wanted to be known as a team player. I prided myself on being “a glue guy” - being able to do whatever is needed in order for our team success. I saw the same qualities in a young man in my town in Illinois and I was immediately drawn to him. Unselfish, hardworking, humble and relentless on the court. His name is Caden Pierce. His dad, Greg and mom Stephanie had become friends and it became a passion for me to help this young man in any way I could. Whether on the court or with his college choice and I was excited to “mentor” this kid. Our families relationship allowed Caden to become friends with my son “Chicago Joe.” Thank you cbssports and Charlie Bloom for telling this beautiful story of their connection.

I took my daughter Rose to work with me over the weekend as I was calling a college basketball game for CBS. This was not “take your child to work” type of trip but instead this adventure was about me connecting with my daughter after a tumultuous few weeks in my household. My son/Rose’s brother “Chicago” Joe had spine surgery on February 1st. His recovery has been up and down and it has been draining on everyone in my house. With my son getting so much attention, this road trip was going to be a time for just the two of us. We drove from Chicago to Cedar Falls, Iowa. Rose was in control of the map on my phone, we listened to Taylor Swift, ate McDonalds and did math problems. We laughed, she cried (because she had to use the bathroom so bad) and we had an experience that I certainly will never forget. I thought I was doing something for her before the trip, after the trip I realized she did something for me. I love you Rose! #Girldad
