Reflecting on the past often brings a mix of emotions. On a visit to my hometown of Bedford Pennsylvania, I asked my wife if it was cool that we stopped by the house I spent most of my childhood. Unbeknownst to me she captured this picture as I was overwhelmed by a sense of gratitude and nostalgia. Sometimes, it's challenging to reconcile where we started and where we are now. But it's crucial, perhaps more often than we realize, to take a moment and appreciate our journey. No path is without its hardships or joys, and it's the combination of both that makes life so rich and fulfilling. This house, more than just a structure, is a testament to lessons learned and dreams yet to be fulfilled. It was here that my grandfather, who lost the house as I was finishing high school, taught me invaluable lessons about money management and the importance of securing a future for one's family. While reclaiming my childhood home remains a dream, I'm reminded that the windshield is larger than the rearview mirror for a reason. It's a metaphor for life, emphasizing the importance of looking forward to the future rather than dwelling on the past. The home I've created for our children now is their beacon, a foundation for their future. This is the essence of the legacy I'm building – not just a place of bricks and mortar, but a nurturing environment filled with love, lessons, and hope. Our true legacy lies in the values and dreams we pass on to the next generation. The Old Stoic (1846) by Emily Brontë Riches I hold in light esteem, And love I laugh to scorn, And lust of fame was but a dream That vanished with the morn. And if I pray, the only prayer That moves my lips for me Is, “Leave the heart that now I bear, And give me liberty!” Yes, as my swift days near their goal, ‘Tis all that I implore - In life and death, a chainless soul, With courage to endure. Brontë's poem captures an internal conflict and desire to not be bound by how the world defines value and worth, so that she could enjoy "liberty." Liberty is defined by Oxford Languages as "the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved," "a right or privilege, especially a statutory one," and "the power or scope to act as one pleases." Where many would look at the things one can acquire or people one can follow or be followed by as a life goal and aspiration, Brontë suggests that these ambitions are not in fact a prize, but are instead the shackles that prevent one to be truly free. Aware of the fleeting passage of time and perhaps alluding to her ailing health (she passed away two years later), she sought "a life and death, a chainless soul / With courage to endure," perhaps acknowledging the societal pressures and challenges to possess that internal discipline. There are very relevant lessons here to internalize now. As credit card defaults rates have risen, consumer spending has continued to accelerate +0.7% month over month, +4.0% year over year. Credit card defaults in excess of 90-days are near 10%. As more layoffs become likely with interest rates staying elevated, you can see how the shackles tighten around the general public even as the risks of default and economic trouble increase. I want you to be chainless, to embrace Brontë's message and prioritze the actions and behaviors necessary to avoid chasing the "dreams" of fame and riches in favor of financial security and wealth building.
