Microsoft have decided to delay the release of Recall amid security concerns. As security professionals, we sincerely hope this massively intrusive feature has some serious rework (and is disabled by default) before being launched. On Microsoft’s new Recall feature. Call me crazy, but a program that takes a picture of your monitor every few seconds seems like an incredible security risk. Security and privacy leaders would seem to agree. One expert called the feature, “A dangerous honeypot for hackers.” Software companies are desperate for access to original content to train their AI models. However, recent missteps with security by major providers, such as Microsoft and Adobe, illustrate the sensitivity of this issue. Clearly consumers are privacy conscious, even more so with the rollout of new AI technologies.

A couple of weeks ago we posted about #Microsoft #Recall which is a feature built into the new Copilot+PCs. There was a bit of controversy around the #privacy of it's functionality and following some backlash, it looks like Microsoft have now made this an optional feature (with the default being disabled). Consumers will now have clearer options to enable it or not. https://lnkd.in/edSbz9ST #Microsoft #Privacy #News #CoPilot #Security

⏳ Microsoft is postponing the launch of its AI-driven Recall feature for Copilot+ PCs due to privacy and security concerns. Originally set for June 18, 2024, Recall will now undergo a preview phase in the Windows Insider Program. This decision reflects Microsoft's commitment to quality and security, with input from the Insider community. Recall captures PC activities via screenshots for a searchable database, utilizing on-device AI. The backlash prompted Microsoft to make Recall opt-in and implement additional security measures, including Windows Hello authentication and "just in time" decryption. This delay coincides with increased scrutiny of tech companies' security practices. Just watched one of the latest unveilings on Microsoft's Security Copilot – and I must say, the future of security operations looks exceptionally bright! This cutting-edge tool is poised to revolutionise the efficiency of SOCs, and the preview video alone has already set my expectations sky-high. As we navigate an increasingly complex cyber landscape, the demand for efficiency within Security Operations Centers (SOCs) has never been higher. Microsoft is stepping up to the plate with an innovative solution that promises to transform our approach to threat detection and response. The Security Copilot leverages advanced AI to streamline processes, reduce noise, and prioritise threats, enabling security professionals to focus on what truly matters. This means faster response times, improved accuracy, and a much-needed reduction in the manual workload that can often lead to burnout. I'm eagerly anticipating the opportunity to get my hands on the product and realising the potential Microsoft Security Copilot will offer SOC workflows and beyond. The prospects for dramatically improved efficiency is immense, and I'm convinced this could be a major leap forward for the industry. This week, Microsoft and its PC partners made new Co-pilot+ PCs available for purchase. However, these PCs are missing one of the most anticipated AI features, called Recall, because of security concerns. Recall takes frequent, searchable snapshots of a user's computer. It's expected that Recall will continue to be tested and will become available on Co-pilot+ PCs at a later time. 1moI can see on paper to the non security professional how this made sense if they also never saw Black Mirror or read 1984 or survived living through a communist regime or given any thought about how this could go wrong. If you didn’t do any of these things, I can see how this would be a neat idea. Seriously though, having a lifelong sidekick AI is a thing that will definitely be in our future, and if secured well enough, it could be a great thing. Probably delivered through our mobile phones when everyone embeds Rabbit R1 capabilities and the AI is localised and the training data is masked/encrypted/indexed in a way only visible or comprehensible to the AI… and not as jpgs in an unencrypted SQLite database! Here’s a something to ponder though: vendor lock-in. If you want to move from Apple to Android, you need to get one AI to talk to another AI and teach it everything the first one knows about you! 🤔
