AHPA commends the Scope of Practice Review team on the broad consultation and research undertaken to develop Issues Paper Two and the associated policy reform options. The Issues Paper provides a comprehensive summary of the issues preventing allied health professionals from working to their full scope of practice, and the detrimental impact of the complex and interlinking set of legislative, regulatory, and funding factors currently limiting the roles and contributions of the sector. While AHPA broadly supports the proposed policy options as a foundation for addressing the barriers identified in the paper, we argue that the there is a need to shift how we think about primary care and the role of the allied health sector. Read our full response to the paper, detailing our concerns, here: #alliedhealth #scopeofpractice

Clin Systems Improvement | Amb Secondary Triage designer | OHCA / Paramedicine excellence || Clin Risk & Human Performance | Prehosp Crit Care ACCP | ACP (Urg/Primary Care) | Educator, Lecturer, Speaker & Presenter
A extremely thought provoking narrative that outlines the case for paramedicine to be considered a default part of the wider healthcare system in AU. Michelle Murphy ASM, on behalf of the Australasian College of Paramedicine makes compelling arguments that such integration would go far in helping to ease the burden on overstretched systems struggling to cope with unscheduled primary care demands. Considering that postgraduate education is increasingly accessible and regarded as somewhat of a new ‘minimum’ standard for clinical career progression, ambulance services will surely and steadily lose the monopoly on paramedicine in the next decade or so. We are well poised to be able to deliver safe, high quality patient centric care in a variety of settings, as we observe with our contemporaries in other jurisdictions- the UK particularly, where specialist and Advanced Care (Para) Practitioners are commonplace in practice outside of traditional ambulance models. The need is clear. The advantages are clear. The challenge is surely set.
"The Australasian College of Paramedicine has been advocating with governments for the broader integration of paramedics across the health system, working as part of multidisciplinary teams alongside GPs, nurses, and other allied health professionals." Read this morning's op-ed, written by our Advocacy and Government Relations Lead Michelle Murphy ASM and published in Insightplus by Medical Journal of Australia.
