Telco operators face declining profitability caused by a combination of stagnant/negative revenue growth due to competition and increasing CAPEX/OPEX caused by greater user traffic. This means that existing efficiency programs are no longer enough to bridge this gap between revenues and costs. Instead, telcos must adopt a bottom-up geolocated framework to maximize revenue and minimize CAPEX/OPEX spending. This focuses on assessing demand/business needs at a local, geographical level; identifies the optimal technology infrastructure to deliver it; and benchmarks plans against industry best practices. Applying this framework supports the development of a future-proof business plan and a new, modular, integrated strategy that reduces cost, increases revenue, and better engages with the operator ecosystem. Once upon a time, the telecom industry was the crown jewel for investors, attracting capital and talent alike. Unfortunately, the dotcom bubble burst and changed that paradigm forever. While the glamour of the Internet was capitalized by others (like GAFAMs), telco players have laid the groundwork in a less than appealing role, supporting heavy investments in infrastructures with limited return hardly above WACC. Given this context, telcos should aim to participate in a different manner and change this paradigm through decisive action across three levers: monetizing (and consolidating) infrastructures, diversifying revenues beyond core business lines, and profoundly digitalizing customer operations.
