We won best internal communications campaign! It's thanks to amazing work from the brilliant team (including Lisa Bergin, Nicola Leonard, Ellie Harriss, Paul Tallant and Jo Hatfield) for their work to engage so many colleagues with our new recognition and benefits platform, Vivup. ✨ I've been reflecting on why this campaign was such a success and what we can learn for the future. It's back to basics but I think there's real value in remembering not to skip these important steps: 📌 Clearly defined roles and responsibilities. The small matrix team worked collaboratively to draw on each other's respective expertise. 📌 SMART objectives. We articulated what success would look like from the outset so we could easily monitor how things were going and whether we were on track. 📌 Genuine engagement. We proactively sought feedback from lots of different stakeholders well before launch, enabling the project team to respond to ideas and questions and create real excitement for the initiative before we went live. I'll be keeping these in mind as we embark on new projects and I'm excited for what we'll achieve next 🙌

Earlier this year, I got to tick off a major item on my professional bucket list - diving into the budding ( 🌲 pun intended) cannabis industry of my home state, New York. I’ve been supporting the state’s first licensed manufacturer with marketing and branding for their six in-house brands. The latest one - Mind Melters Concentrates - just hit the shelves, and I gotta say, the packaging is out of this world! What fuels my branding passion? Good brands - those that prioritize people, our planet, and create spaces where everyone can thrive together. Partnering with this veteran-owned company, whose mission to foster social equity in the cannabis industry and beyond aligns with mine, has been an absolute treat. I've had the chance to work on some incredibly exciting and meaningful campaigns and I can't wait to share them with you all. While exploring the green pastures of cannabis has been exciting, I'm not veering away from my roots. Food and beverage branding continues to be our bread, butter, and jelly at Moonman Studio. In fact, we're just about to publicly launch our sister venture, Voyagr Restaurant Branding & Marketing, next month. Regardless of the industry, my mission is unwavering: To help good brands tell their stories, stand out in a bustling market, and forge meaningful connections. People are always surprised by how small the marketing team is at Chili Piper. And it's a compliment. Last week, one of our partners (a unicorn company you all know and most use) thought our marketing team was as big as theirs (50+ people in marketing). When I talked to a different partner about our big launch this week, his jaw hit the floor when I told him how small we are. Our marketing team is currently 3 people (Tara, Madeleine and me), and one of them is out on maternity leave. Yes, we do have some open headcount, and yes, it was a bigger team in the past, but we get a LOT done for a lean team. How? Everyone is given a lot of freedom and autonomy. We hire great operators (not armchair generals) who are great at many things. We have great partners and contractors to help multiply our work. We have a culture of growth, learning and experimentation. We have a bias towards action. There's very minimal politicking at work. There's a lot of transparency and trust with information so that everyone has what they need to move fast and make great decisions. There's a focus on (and training around) good communication, feedback and conflict resolution. We have fun at work!

My initial foray into healthcare advertising marked the beginning of my professional journey, and it all started at Robert A. Becker, EURO RSCG, nestled on 350 Hudson Street in New York, NY. Fresh out of college, I had recently relocated from South Africa to pursue my career aspirations. New York City, with its blend of terror and wonder, was my new backdrop. My daily commute from Milford, CT, stretched for over two hours each way, and despite the meager pay, I considered myself fortunate for the lack of spare time. Entry-level positions in advertising scarcely offered wages better than the minimum. Swiftly, I climbed the rungs of the lower-tier roles and eventually found myself in the position of a New Business Coordinator, working directly alongside Sander Flaum, the company's president. He was a legendary figure in the industry, and regrettably, he passed away approximately a year ago. His influence extended far and wide, with his mentees now holding influential positions throughout the industry. From him, I gleaned invaluable lessons that have stayed with me. Lesson #1: Alway stay top of mind - Part of my responsibilities involved ensuring a constant flow of communication from Becker to both existing and potential clients. I distinctly recall printing and affixing labels to countless mailings of publications containing Sander's insights. Many years into my career, I could still identify individuals by their company and position. Lesson #2: If it’s not good enough, don’t show it - Every member of Becker's team will vividly remember this adage. We were drilled with the belief that it was far better to request more time than to showcase subpar work. As the pitch coordinator, I had the opportunity to witness the arduous process of conceiving and refining groundbreaking ideas, even if it meant burning the midnight oil repeatedly. And there were still nights when the work fell short of the mark. Lesson #3: Never Settle - Sander referred to this as the fifth "P" in marketing, a form of constructive paranoia. I interpreted it as a positive driving force: staying abreast of industry developments, delivering continual value to clients, tirelessly pursuing excellence, and understanding that each day required us to earn our place in the business. With these fundamental lessons ingrained in my approach, my career continued to advance. I sought guidance from Sander at various junctures, and I consider myself immensely fortunate to have collaborated with some of the industry's most talented professionals at such an early stage in my career. This reflection holds particular significance to me as I take a moment to contemplate and pay tribute to Sander as one of my mentors.
