👉 Supraharmonics - How do supraharmonics affect power quality? 👉 Supraharmonics refer to voltage or current waveform distortions in the frequency range between 2 kHz and 150 kHz. These disturbances are caused by various devices and loads, including active rectifiers, inverters, and battery chargers. The rapid adoption of distributed inverter technology and active rectifier loads has contributed to the increase in supraharmonics on power systems. These disturbances can be challenging to measure due to their wide variability over time. While they fall outside the requirements of standard harmonic limits, they can still impact equipment and systems. For instance, street lighting, traffic controls, and household appliances may experience malfunctions or audible noise when exposed to high supraharmonics. 👉 Supraharmonics can significantly impact power quality in several ways: - Voltage Distortion: Supraharmonics cause voltage waveform distortions, leading to irregularities in the sinusoidal voltage. This can affect sensitive equipment and lead to malfunctions or reduced performance. - Equipment Interference: Devices like variable frequency drives (VFDs), inverters, and battery chargers generate supraharmonics. When these devices share the same electrical network, they can interfere with each other, affecting overall system stability. - Resonance: Supraharmonics can resonate with the natural frequencies of equipment or power system components (such as transformers or capacitors). Resonance amplifies the impact of supraharmonics, potentially causing equipment damage or failure. - Increased Losses: Higher-frequency components in the current waveform result in additional losses in conductors, transformers, and other components. These losses reduce system efficiency. - Audible Noise: Supraharmonics can produce audible noise in equipment, which may be annoying or disruptive. - Harmonic Interaction: Supraharmonics interact with standard harmonics (e.g., 50 Hz or 60 Hz) and create complex waveforms.
