This is the story of Jeff Byers. An NFL-player turned entrepreneur who refused to quit. And who we’re thrilled to back at The Family Fund. Here's his story: Jeff Byers had always been an amazing athlete. He led his high school team to the state championship in 2003. And ended up attending the University of Southern California (USC). Life was good. He pursued a Master's in business while winning national championships. After playing in the NFL for four years, he retired in 2014. And joined a biotech startup the next year. The startup had exciting technology around transdermal drug delivery (TDD). TDD is a painless method of delivering drugs by applying a drug formulation on the skin. His idea was to use the same tech to deliver non-drugs to athletes like: - Vitamins - Electrolytes, and - Minerals So, in 2018, Jeff started Amp Human with Erica Good. Amp Human was a human performance company dedicated to helping athletes reach their full potential. This is when I first met Jeff - right after he launched the first AH product: PR Lotion. A lotion that delivers the natural electrolyte sodium bicarbonate directly to your muscles. But they didn't just want to launch products. They wanted to build a human performance company. So they partnered with elite athletes from triathletes to Tour de France cyclists, and, of course, NFL players. The brand and their products were respected, but growth was stagnant and the company remained small. VCs would act interested and then ghost them with no reply. They were stuck searching for solutions. This is when they came across Momentous. Momentous was a small supplement brand ~ roughly the same size as AH. But similar to AH, it was highly respected for quality with college/pro sports teams. And like AH, they were also struggling to grow. Momentous had gone through 6.5 years of: - High Quality Sourcing - Dialed-in manufacturing - Supply chain optimization Plus, they had all the key certifications & tests already completed. This asset was much more valuable than their revenues. So, they merged with Momentous in an equity-based deal. Which proved to be a merger made in heaven. Around the same time, Dr. Huberman launched his podcast. So Momentous signed a long-term partnership with Huberman. Soon after they partnered with Tim Ferriss and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Pump Club. Most importantly, the quality of their products & research has remained top-tier. All of this helped Momentous create the most trustworthy brand in the supplement space. As the “anti-supplement supplement company.” Quality is often the best competitive advantage. Lesson: Leverage the ONE key thing that makes you different and build a powerful brand around that. — If you enjoy this, ♻️ repost to help your network. Small correction. Momentous was about 4.5 years old at that time and had grown every year, albeit not nearly as fast we would have liked.

This is so inspiring, Sean. Markets are saturating. Competition is increasing. The best way to survive? STANDING OUT IN MARKET. Improve your products / services. Improve the quality of your product. Improve the customer experience. Figure out that 1 competitive advantage.

For elite performers - esp in a non-regulated space, that real commitment to R&D / quality are massive differentiators. Smart partnering w/ the Tim Ferriss and Arnold brands to bring some quick credibility too. Keep making the world better!
