Key Differences Database: ECC supports multiple databases. S/4HANA is designed to run exclusively on the SAP HANA database. Performance: S/4HANA offers superior performance due to in-memory computing. ECC's performance depends on the underlying database and infrastructure. Data Model: ECC uses a more traditional, complex data model. S/4HANA has a simplified data model, reducing data redundancy and improving efficiency. User Interface: ECC's user interface is more traditional and less intuitive. S/4HANA uses the modern, role-based SAP Fiori interface. Functionality: S/4HANA includes new functionalities and enhancements not available in ECC. S/4HANA leverages advanced technologies like AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics. Deployment and Maintenance: ECC typically requires more effort for deployment and maintenance. S/4HANA, especially in the cloud, offers more streamlined deployment and easier maintenance with regular updates from SAP.

Insightful! Great graphics too, conveys the point with humour!😋. On a serious note, the shortfall of SAP consultants is real and is reaching seriousness similar to Y2K!

Reminds me heavily of the the year 2000 race with loads of legacy programs unable to deal with 4 digits. Resources were scarce and those available were not on top of things. Will we see a similar development?

Melorine, while SAP S/4HANA does indeed introduce new functional capabilities, my observation is that due to the skills shortage (including at systems integrators), there are S/4HANA projects being implemented with a classic ECC mindset, where new innovations are not considered and as such it is more of a replatforming rather than a genuine transformation. It is also important not to dramatise the 2027 “deadline”. Ultimately the timing of a move to SAP S/4HANA is a business decision for SAP customers and not something SAP can impose. ECC systems are not going to drop off a cliff in 2027.

Almost completed an s4 conversion from ecc. The market is good but I don't see any major panic in the UK. Conversions take about 1 year and the deadline is 2027 so time will tell if there's any shortage of SAP resource.

Melorine Parsy Can you clarify how exactly customers will start losing money in the first 3 years after ECC support stops? We have to take into account that migration is a CAPEX which may give more OPEX than before. And there is no guarantee of return on investment. All these things have the same story about CAPEX and OPEX: - Embedded analytics - Robotic process automation - Machine Learning - AI - The SAP CoPilot digital assistant. I'm not against migration, I'm just waiting for a discussion like this.

All these "new functional capabilities' are usually paid extra and are also available outside of SAP (via third party vendors e.g.). In some cases it does not make senses financially to invest into huge S/4 Hana programs. ECC can be kept as a data entry & storage system. Digital transformation to be done cheaper and more efficient outside of SAP.
