Some movements need to mature, and this is one of them. The business environment has the advantage that ideas can be vetted by the results you get instead of a vague notion of what is virtuous. In the business environment, you also get real-time feedback in that the success of the endeavor is the goal. Of course, we also want to make sure that what we do benefits society overall but those measurements are often very nebulous. The point here is that focused, measurable goals are the best way to vet an idea. Couple that with a more thoughtful analysis of what we are looking for from our actions, and we grow. Corporate boards are not installed to boil the ocean or produce heaven on earth, they have a job to do for the company and the stakeholders of that company in the context of business. That should determine 1) who needs to be around the Board table and 2) what they must produce to move the dials. #strategicthinking

1. Don’t just review the company’s strategy. Help create it. 2. Don’t just expect trust. Build it. 3. Don’t just assess the company’s culture. Help shape it. 4. Don’t just receive information. Provide it. 5. Don’t just look different. Think different. 6. Don’t just fire CEOs. Get to know future ones.

   Public company boards are typically focused on oversight, supporting the management team while keeping a respectful distance from day-to-day operations. In contrast, boards of companies owned by private equity tend to be much more hands-on. Often populated by former CEOs, these boards are more likely to get involved in shaping strategy and culture, providing information to the company, and actively engaging with future CEO candidates further in advance of succession.

What are and should business schools be doing to impact issues of equity and opportunity? One path is providing employment opportunities for returning citizens.

In public companies, board members focus on oversight and support the executive team without getting involved in daily operations.
