The CROWN Act, which marks its third anniversary today, was implemented to actively prohibit race-based hair discrimination. The first version of this law was established in California in 2019 and has since expanded to nearly half the states in the nation. These protections were established to honor individuals’ rights to wearing natural hair or cultural protective styles, like braids or twists, in the workplace or schools. According to a 2019 study by Dove in collaboration with the CROWN Coalition, Black women are 30 percent more likely to be made aware of a formal workplace appearance policy. There are also long-term health reasons to reduce restrictions on Black women's hair. Recent studies, including a decades-long project run by Boston University’s Black Women’s Health, have shown that Black women who use chemical hair straighteners, otherwise known as relaxers or perms, are more likely to develop multiple forms of cancer. Relaxers have been a common treatment used in cosmetology to change the texture of one’s hair. The treatment typically contains carcinogens including parabens, Bisphenol A, heavy metals, and formaldehyde. If left in hair for longer than suggested, the chemicals will damage the scalp and ultimately be absorbed. According to the Boston University report published in 2023, Black women who have used relaxers containing lye more than seven times a year over the course of 15 years are more likely to develop breast cancer. Though breast cancer affects White women at higher rates than any other race, Black women are 40 percent more likely to die from the disease. The same study also reported that women who use relaxers more than twice a year have a 50 percent higher risk of developing uterine cancer. Relaxers have long been heavily marketed toward Black women, in part to help them assimilate their appearance in systemic institutions. ✍️: Victoria Clark, audience engagement fellow 📸: Lee Tracey/BIPs/Getty Images
