🔥 Title IX Standoff! 🔥 In a dramatic political standoff, eight states are defying the Biden administration's new Title IX regulations, risking nearly $13 billion in federal aid for public universities. 😱 Here are 3 key points from the heated debate: 1️⃣ State vs. Federal Clash - Governors from Arkansas to Texas are refusing to comply, citing conflicts with state laws, especially regarding protections for transgender students. I’m not sure about most folks but posting anything work or industry related right now feels odd/off? I don’t even know if odd or off is the right word but it’s all I have right now. But this is an important one. The team at PodPod and Campaign Magazine UK are asking more people to register themselves or nominate friends, coworkers, networks to ensure they hit their commitments to a more representative and inclusive panel of judges for the Audio Advertising Awards. You can read about their commitment in the registration link below. I don’t think there is any criteria apart from a love of audio and some relevance or adjacency to the industry. But don’t even let that small part hold you back. I’m unsure on travel and accessibility criteria but I am sure they will meet needs here. To truly review and push forward on creativity and innovation in our sector we need multiple POVs and lived experiences in the room. One last end of the year request for a vote-up from my network. Each year, the Anthem Awards honors the purpose & mission-driven work of people, companies and organizations worldwide. Now, we all know that the moniker "purpose & mission driven" can sometimes be nothing more than "virtue signaling." However, there are brands, advertisers, and organizations who are truly committed to making a difference. There's some great work being done, and it deserves to be recognized. As some of you are aware, we've been leading the way in advocating for sonic diversity in advertings; more specifically, the use of more diverse voice talent in mass market advertising. Our first-of-its-kind research into the impact of racialized listening on ad favorability and effectiveness has paved the way to creating a business case for sonic diversity, and our Stand For Sonic Diversity presentations and website (https://lnkd.in/d93NYyp) continues to education and inspire folks in our industry to make much needed changes in our approach to voice casting, scriptwriting, production, strategy and more. It's an initiative that has had a profound impact on our own casting practices and advocacy within SiriusXM and Pandora. This year, both those initiatives are finalists for an Anthem Award. Currently, there's public voting for a "Peoples Choice" award, which brings me to my ask. If you're so inclined, please register and upvote one of these initiatives to help bring even more visibility to our work advocating for sonic diversity. 🏳️🌈 Coming out - people often think that you only ever come out once, when in fact it is often a life-long recurring process. Each new work or social situation can present awkward moments, when in a split-second you must decide whether you wish to reveal your identity, ignore it or worse choose to tell a white lie. Imagine you’re a gay married man – how would you react if, as a new starter at work, a colleague innocently asks about “your wife”? Or you’re checking into a hotel and the reception staff member whilst looking at you and your husband says, “Apologies, we have you down for a double room, but I’ll ask housekeeping to make it up as a twin.” Nowadays I confess to taking slight pleasure in correcting someone, so I’d probably reply, “Oh you mean my husband?” and “We are married, so a double is just fine, thanks”. It’s never my intention to make people feel bad, just with a smile on my face to make others think a little first before speaking. Using neutral language with those we don’t know is important to avoid making the recipient have to decide how they react. In years gone by, I may have hidden the truth but once you do that, you’re not able to be your authentic self which can be detrimental to performance or relationships. Political Strategists, Agency Tacticians, Ad Tech companies and Campaign Managers showed up in full force and it's going to take a while to process all I learned and absorbed! Key Ad Tech, Marketing and Political Takeaways: - A Senator's campaign manager found content SHARED indicated 60%-70% greater likelihood of Voting for a candidate.
