🚨 ALERT 🚨The NSW Government has introduced significant amendments to state industrial relations legislation. Those amendments follow significant promises the Government made to the Union movement prior to its election, and the recommendations made to the Government by the Industrial Relations Taskforce it established shortly after its election. This week, the Industrial Relations Amendment Bill 2023 (NSW) passed through both houses of parliament, and it is expected to soon receive royal assent and come into effect. Christa Lenard and Luke Maroney summarise the key changes here: https://bit.ly/3T80M02 #WorkplaceRelations #WorkplaceLaw #EmploymentLaw

For a party set to win the UK General Election, surprisingly little is known about Labour’s swathe of Prospective Parliamentary Candidates (PPCs). To better understand what is likely to shape the future direction of a Labour government, Penta has analysed the public views and campaigns of almost 150 of Labour’s PPCs throughout 2023 to gain an understanding of what will motivate them post-election. Penta’s analysis has identified a number of key areas where Labour PPCs diverge from the party’s leadership. We believe that these divergences are an important signal to what they will campaign on - and pressure the Labour Government on - if they are elected to Parliament on 4th July. Will your business in Europe be affected by the outcome of this election? Interested to read the report and analysis in full? Last week, there was a huge election going on in the European Union – the election for the European Parliament. Citizens in the EU went to poll stations to cast their votes for future MEPs (members of the European Parliaments). But what exactly is the European Parliament? Why it it so important in the EU? As you can tell from its name, the European Parliament is quite similar to national parliament, as it is in charge of making and changing laws, inspecting and approving budgets and supervising other authorities in the EU. Let’s talk about the legislative and budgetary power first. In most cases, the European Parliament shares equal legislative and budgetary power with the Council (that’s another crucial institution in the EU!). Unlike most national parliaments where they enjoy the right of legislative initiative, the European Parliament doesn’t have the official right to initiate a legislative procedure! If they want to make a new law or change an existing law, they have to request the Commission (oops, another important institution in the EU – the executive institution) the initiate the procedure. Aside from the legislative and budgetary power, the European Parliament also has the supervisory power over other institutions. For example, the appointment of a new president of the Commission requires the approval from the European Parliament. It can also censure the Commission if it deems necessary. The election of the European Parliament takes place every 5 years. This time, 720 new MEPs will be elected. In principle, the seats are allocated proportionately according to the population of Member States. Right now, Germany has most MEPs, with France being the second (because they have more people!). I hope this post helps you understand the basis of European Parliament! If you wish to know more information, you can also visit the following website: https://lnkd.in/eD3VRruK

Labour’s National Policy Forum plays a leading role in shaping the party’s election manifesto. Over the weekend it provided Keir Starmer with a mandate to take its draft policy outline to Party Conference for debate this October. How does this fit with Labour’s overall manifesto development process, and what does this important step mean for businesses seeking to engage with the opposition now, in advance of Conference, and into early 2024? https://lnkd.in/eEQeiUEy
