This is not proper journalism. I'm not sure why Shaad D'Souza, is trashing the Visual Effects community, I can only think it's to get some extra clicks. Most of these so-called 'practical FXs' films have hundreds, if not thousands of VFX and CG shots. Even the main photo of the article has a blue screen! The Guardian should be ashamed of publishing this article without proper research! Be better! https://lnkd.in/dauakgCi

This anti-CGI (nonsense) backlash has to stop!!! I hope that this article represents a good starting point so that the hard work is recognized and not unfairly used as a marketing strategy.

VFX Supervisor - Compositing Supervisor - London VES Co-Chair - AI-Gen VFX Director and Designer for film
When you approach the career as a Journalist it is known the very first thing to do is to get informed on matters, report the truth and then it is fine to write your piece under a personal perspective. However this article - just like a few others I came across with lately - clearly demonstrate a complete lack of knowledge on the matter, it isn't informative and doesn't bring anything useful or new to the readers. Not to mention that this old and flaunting romanticism on the dawn of the cinema methods is very stuffy and boring. The writer here just selected a list of unfortunate statements and put it down in a way it really damages the image of our global community, like everything we touch is wrong. As set supervisor I had the opportunity to supervise many sets and be a consultant for directors and productions and for sure I would support the idea of 'make it for real' when possible - after all the VFX are a tool for filmmakers - and as a digital artist I'm also very well aware of the potentialities so I wound never oppose to use VFX at all ! We can create worlds, animations, monsters and gorgeous suggestions with our expertise and a crafty use of the tools, images which wouldn't be possible otherwise. I always like quoting an old good film, Truman Show, where the city ground was built for real so the actors could interact with the shops etc. and then all the building on top were extended in CG. Would you spend tons of bucks to build blocks for real just because you want to oppose to the technology ? I reckon I can be bold enough to predict the word of a producer on that! Personally I think these kind of opinions shouldn't be so focused on the VFX artistry - at least not only - but also on production and directors' choices. I can live with the fact that some of the late film products didn't came out exactly with the best expected quality but it doesn't mean all of sudden the VFX artistry is to blame entirely. There could be many other reasons deep at the core of the evolution of the film industry itself and the streaming platforms in recent years. We all know how it goes. In the end everybody knows how VFX matter to the Film Industry, nobody could state the contrary. This journalist missed a very good opportunity to get to the core of the issue and reported a shallowly listing discrediting opinions instead, it is very sad that such a prestigious journal like The Guardians did make it through like that. I think we should appeal to the democratic opportunity of an article on the very same journal where we could freely speak out our perspective. This is something I would like to bring to the table of VES if possible.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE TRUE POTENTIAL OF INTEGRATING GENERATIVE AI INTO YOUR EXISTING WORKFLOW My most recent animated project for the band 'Danger! Earthquake!' leaned heavily into Midjourney AI from the concept to the completion phase. A lot of manual editing was required to bring all the different scenes into a cohesive story. Adobe's Generative Fill was invaluable when converting the flat images to parallax 3D scenes. Allowing me to fill in large area's of background layers so I could move the camera deep into the scenes without having dead zones. For the finishing touches the finished artwork was put into Pika Labs to create some VFX style effects which were then blended back into the animated scenes. https://lnkd.in/gn2pQguX #aiartcommunity #aivideo #midjourney #graphicdesign #animation #vfx

The importance of white balance. Auto is not always accurate! Sure sometimes you intentionally may add a filter or color effect for style, but for depositions, avoid your witness looking ill or like a Smurf with a professional videographer. #depositions #legalvideo #legalvideographer #videography #clvs
